Whites don't have to be aware of race, like men don't have to be aware of gender, like straights don't have to be aware of sexual orientation. You're an idiot.

it's a social construction. you know exactly what it means. and because you are white and i would guess, male, you don't have to think about it. just because you can ignore it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

so sad that you even label your own wife and kids this way. lets see, one of their grandparents is asian, one is african. that makes then a quadroon? you belong in the 1930s. do people actually still think this way in 2011? pathetic.

Maybe watch Tiger Woods...on the Golf channel, not on TMZ.

Not the pp you're quoting. YOU'RE the one throwing around accusations of racism and archaic racist terms. You don't have any idea what you're talking about. I grew up as one of THREE black children in my school. I can assure, it is important for a child to read a book or watch a show that has a well thought out character that looks like you. Hell, I'm still thrilled when I find something featuring a black female that isn't a sassy know-it-all stereotype.

Unless you have something to add, why don't you do us all a favor and go back under your bridge and wait for some goats to cross it?

Stop feeding the troll people. If everyone would just ignore the post they'll go away.

Agree that Sid the Science Kid fits what OP is asking for, but it drives me nuts. He's overweight and shuffles his feet when he walks and the Asian girl talks like she's stoned.

I know I know, but that's a really sore spot with me. I also think it's just as important to have strong same gender role models too.

Back on topic, Super Why is cool.

Isn't it pretty to think we should all just be "colorblind.". And kids want to see characters that look like them, which is only natural.

Right, because that light-peachy-pinky shade of most action heros is NOT a color?!?

Tell that to my brown-hued mixed race son. Why do all the action figures to buy look like his white friends, but not like him?

Darling, you need a good history lesson on Jim Crow, too.

How very egalitarian of the white males to coach us on how to ignore race. Colorblind works very well when the playing field is equal. Unfortunately, we still haven't gotten there. What colorblind really means when the situation is not equal is to maintain the status quo where everything favors white males, because that's they way it's always been.

I am the multiracial mother, dumbass. You just assumed that I was white and male- like you assume everyone who is not otherwise labeled is. you can't help it- most people don't bother to think (like yourself). glad that other posters have the patience to outline the academic reasoning that i'm to tired of explaining to idiots like you.

Sorry to hijack the thread, OP. Unfortunately, I have no contributions to make- kids are too young for TV and there are not enough black characters in the mainstream for me to have picked up by osmosis.

The Longshots:The true story of Jasmine Plummer who, at the age of eleven, became the first female to play in Pop Warner football tournament in its 56-year history.

Akeelah and the Bee: A young girl from South Los Angeles tries to make it to the National Spelling Bee.

Depending on your son's maturity level I might wait until 8 for these movies.

The Express: A drama based on the life of college football hero Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy.

Remember the Titans: The true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit.

Men In Black: Will Smith fights aliens

Everybody should see these movies - they are great!

Check IMDB for parental guidelines - I am pretty liberal about language.

It get old to say this, but read Nurtureshock by Po Bryson, and then you will understand why failing to teach children about differences in an effort to be post-racial or colorblind can backfire mightily.
