Tv or movies with non white heroes for a 5 year old boy?

Does anyone have any ideas? We've watched "the last airbender" the animated version. I'm having trouble
finding other material. (We're posted abroad from the dc area, so no American broadcast tv, but we can get Netflix.)
Thanks in advance.

As an Asian American, I personally won't buy or watch "The Last Airbender". Although the characters are supposed to be Asians, they cast Caucasians as the primary characters. It's like back in the 1930's with Charlie Chan. With the number of talented Asian American and Asian actors out there, they couldn't find one to play these characters. I don't ask others to ban the movie, but I do so for my own personal values. If your goal is to show non-white heroes, then you probably want ones that are also portrayed by non-white actors or it tends to lose some of the lesson.

Bill Cosby's old Fat Albert series is now available on DVD. Each episode has a nice moral to it. I'm white so maybe I wouldn't know if parts of the show could be considered offensive. And I think there is one you might want to skip about "dope is dope," but most of them are cute, like the tomboy who is better at sports than most of the boys but can't cook as well as Fat Albert, or the one where Donald pretends to be mad about his new baby sister but is secretly crazy about her.

Clone Wars also has a lot of strange but herioc Star Wars characters that are not human and come in an array of colors.

I wouldn't recommend this for a five year old though.

Funny, I immediately thought of Mulan as well but not because of Mulan but because my young son adored Captain Sheng (sp?). Also, look into Hook (the Lost Boys in this version are diverse), Pocahontas, and Aladdin.

OP said they watch the animated version...which by the way is AWESOME. The movie, I agree, sucked.

I've never heard of it...I'll have to look it up on IMDB to find out why I might be bothered by it to see if I would or not.

We just watched The Golden Blaze on Netflix play instantly. The hero is a young African American boy.

There are a TON of movies with animals as the main "character" - like 101 Dalmations, the Aristocats, Air Bud, stewart Little, etc.

Also what about the Muppets? OR Fraggle Rock (maybe he's a little too young for Fraggle Rock...)

Great, we can all watch white people and not worry about stupid labels like race.

race labels are stupid. what does "race" even mean anymore? it means nothing genetically. how many races are there? how do you categorize races? do you need 2 or 3 grandparents of a particular "race" to be a member? Sounds like Jim Crow to me.

Just IGNORE race and focus on HUMANITY.
