Tv or movies with non white heroes for a 5 year old boy?

Anonymous
I'm looking for some tv shows -- animated or live action, that have non white heroes. This is for my 5 year old son.
Does anyone have any ideas? We've watched "the last airbender" the animated version. I'm having trouble
finding other material. (We're posted abroad from the dc area, so no American broadcast tv, but we can get Netflix.)
Thanks in advance.

Super Why has a black hero princess. There is always Dora and Diego, don't know how well that would hold the attention of a 5 year old. The Disney cartoon Mulan has an Asian girl hero. The Dr. Dolittle tv shows has Eddie Murphy as Dr. Dolittle.

I bought these DVDs for my son. He doesn't like the cartoons that well, but he does love the music:

The boy in "Up" is Asian, though I'm not sure that kids even notice. I almost didn't realize it myself.

There's pokemon, Sid the science kid.
My son is 4, we use Netflix, but most shows we watch are animals, like Wonder Pets, Dinosaur Train...

I've seen great reviews on netflix for "Kirikou and the Sorceress"--for about ages 5 and up. It's set in Africa.

We've also enjoyed movies by Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki--"Ponyo," "My Neighbor Totoro," and "Kiki's Delivery Service."

5 is probably too old for Little Bill, right?

Interesting...it seems that there are a number of mainstream non-white heroines, but not males.

There's Aladdin. He's brown. He has the exact same hair as my middle-eastern husband, complete with the floppy bit over one eye.

OP here. Thanks so much for the suggestions! I'm off to get a few of them now.

Lilo and Stitch?

And 10:28--I'd never noticed that before, but I think you might be right.

Some of the episodes of the animated Star Wars the Clone Wars has Mace Windu as a main character, but not all of them. You would need to read the synopsis. Mace is the character played by Samuel Jackson in the movies.

Clone Wars also has a lot of strange but herioc Star Wars characters that are not human and come in an array of colors.
