If you want an awesome cupcake, try the Red Velvet at the Bayou Bakery in Courthouse. I don't know how they get the top that texture but I know I can't make it like that at home... And the cream cheese frosting, YUM.

Oh wait, were we talking about the cupcake trend? Well I wouldn't wait in line to buy one, but why is it any worse than a $3 ice cream cone at Baskin Robbins--I can buy a half gallon of Breyers for that. It's an outing. Obvious.

Cake Love in Shirlington is the worst. I actually spat out a bite of one of their cupcakes, it was so dry and gross.

True dat. Cold stone creamery, ben and jerry's? EXPENSIVE.

It's also why I'll spend 12 bucks on a cocktail I can surely shake at home.

GC cupcakes are NOT good. The cake is dense and the icing is thick and not creamy. I dont get the hype of it or having to pay for a freaking bag/ and or box. If I buy a cupcake from you why the hell should I pay for it to be put in something so I dont have to carry it in my hand?

I love Just Cakes in Bethesda. Actually got my wedding cake there but they sell cupcakes daily and they cake is amazing and the icing is creamy and light. Best red velvet I have ever had!

I wonder what will go in the vacant store in a few years when these stores close up.

I guess I'm in the minority in that I think georgetown cupcakes are pretty delicious. But that being said, you will never catch me waiting in a long line for them. Every winter one of our vendors sends a huge box to my company as a holiday gift, and that's when I get my fix. The fact that there's essentially a bouncer guarding the line turns me off so completely, even if I wanted to stand in that line, I couldn't bring myself to do it.

This is me also - they are delicious, and I've never once been there and never will go.

The times that people have brought cupcakes from CakeLove or Georgetown Cupcakes, I have not been super-impressed. I'm sure the ingredients are better than Safeway or Giants, but the taste was not anything to write home about.

I had a mini-cupcake from Buzz Bakery this weekend though, and they were AMAZING. And I loved the mini-size, as there wasn't as large of a serving of guilt.

FWIW, I don't love all cakes either. I'm partial to moist and rich cakes, not light and dry. Now, if a bakery could make a mini-cupcake of Paul Prudhomme's pecan spice cake, I might be in heaven.

ice cream, coffee, cupcakes, what is the next trend?

People, I told you that. Three pages ago. Seriously. Think about it. Gourmet pie. Not hair pie for you posters whose minds are constantly in the gutter and are slumming here in between refreshing the sex forum. I'm talking apple crumb pie, coconut creme pie, chart pie, field mouse etoufee pie, lottery pie, granite and marble pie, CIO pie-the possibilities are endless and folks in this area will pay rent money for bullshit items that no one needs in a snowstorm. Remember doggie bakeries? Guess what, some of them are still in business. Pie, I'm telling you, it's the knave of the future.

I'm with the OP. Just tried one from....I don't know...bakeshop - only because we got a free coupon and the other mom I was with wanted to go. I found it to be terribly over-rated. Main reason I haven't tried it before is I just couldn't fathom spending $2 or whatever it is on one cupcake.

In six months, if the economy looks up, you'll be spending $6.75 on a lobster americaine mini pie because not only did your friends stand in line for one but there is actually a reality show about the people who make them fighting with each other.
