Confused about turkey - what about fresh sliced turkey from the deli (not packaged)

Ha, I'm 12:49 and had never heard the soft serve ice ream rule until this thread! I honestly think this stuff changes super rapidly and for my first pg in 2008, that rule was not around and now it is. It's all a little bit nuts if you ask me.

From what I have heard its the cold deli meat thats the problem, not the turkey itself; thanksgiving turkey is fine

It was. My first was born in 2006. I don't consider myself overly paranoid but a very anti-alarmist public health expert in my family very strongly advised me re: the soft serve. Shrug. Everyone has their own risk analyses -- I just didn't feel strongly enough about soft serve over traditional ice cream to take the (albeit small) risk.

I just looked this up (soft serve). There are 2,500 cases of listeria in the US a year. Approximately 1/3 are from pregnant women. So that is roughly 900 cases. There are over 4 million births in the US, so that tells you about the miniscule risk - but even more telling is that I would bet the vast majority of these cases are due to the risks we hear about - deli meat, hot dogs, etc., soft cheeses. Was not able to find any source directly linking an outbreak to soft serve.

Further, a lot of the large reputable chains argue their processes protect against listeria. I'm pretty risk adverse but this seems like a HUGE stretch to me. I don't eat deli meat and don't even eat soft pasteurized cheeses while pregnant, but soft serve does not seem like a risk. But each person would have to judge for herself of course.

We don't really know how many cases there are a year. It is thought that most exposed do not become ill and many who become ill are not diagnosed with listeria. We also don't know how many miscarriages/stillbirths of unknown cause might be related.

I agree that it is likely still a small risk -- I just chose not to take it, as I didn't feel I was missing out on much.

Agree, but it's curious that I could not find one outbreak of listeria from soft-serve in the US. So I'm not fully convinced it's a risk. The other risks are pretty well-documented, so I'm wondering if standards in the US are higher than other countries where there seems to be a concern. I'm beginning to think this might be a myth, and not a real risk (or at least not near as dangerous as eating fruits or vegetables, which I imagine most pregnant women aren't willing to give up).

My dr also said this whole thing is made to sound like a bigger deal than it is. I ate sandwich meat throughout both pregnancies and everything was fine.

OP - you should just ask the person behind the deli counter. Just don't do it at lunch time.

If this is a reference to the other thread on taking too long of a turn in line, I love it!

The turkey is long gone and I didn't eat it. Just wasn't worth it even though it was probably safe. I might have my mom bake a Thanksgiving style turkey for me which she sometimes does so my dad can have turkey sandwiches. Yum.

I'm a bit confused myself about the deli meat precautions.. this is my first pregnancy... I'm wondering, if exposed to listeria from eating deli meat (or other foods) would the woman who consumed this bacteria also feel sickly or feel any effects or does it just harm the unborn baby?

If you're exposed to listeria, you'll know, and FAST. You'll feel like crap. It's food poisoning.

The deli meat thing really bummed me out last time I was pregnant. This time I bought an awesome panini maker and am grilling all our sandwiches so I figure problem solved.
I worried too much during my with my last one - I am determined to enjoy these 9 months more...there is a lot of fear out there but you still have to live!
