Confused about turkey - what about fresh sliced turkey from the deli (not packaged)

The answer to all of this is to stop eating. And don't leave your house at all. Or invite anyone over. Actually, just wrap your pregnant self in a bubble and abstain from contact with anything.

I agree. Clearly the most sensible approach for those who truly care about the lives of their babies.

It is getting to be a little insane. Listeria CAN be on sliced fruit, salads/raw veggies, deli meats, soft serve ice cream, certain cheeses, frozen foods...you kind of have to pick your battles.

I'm the OP and deli meat is an easy one for me to stay away from it, but if there is sliced fruit at a meeting at work, I'm going to eat it. And I had soft serve ice cream a few times when I was pregnant with my first (oddly I CRAVED it for some reason during that pregnancy, not so this one).

I've recommended it before, but highly recommend reading "Panic Free Pregnancy." It debunks some of the overblown risks. Doesn't mention fresh sliced turkey from Whole Foods though

Who knew? Im on dc2 and have never even bothered with this. I've had raw fish too...the horror I know. I would think your more likely to get sick from fresh fruit and veggies then processed anything (except preformed hamburgers and if your eating that you've got bigger problems). Must be your first right?

I'm the OP - it's my second child. Yeah, there are real dangers, some overblown some real. According to "Panic Free Pregnancy" there are no risks to the baby from eating raw fish because that type of bacteria (salmonella) doesn't cross the placenta. The danger there is that if mom gets sick and dehyrdated it's not great, but with proper treatment everything should be fine. With deli meat etc. the danger is listeria, which DOES cross the placenta. Thankfully, listeria in pregnancy is still quite rare, but pregnant women are more susceptible. ]

It's like anything - many women will eat deli meat, soft cheese, etc. every day and not have a problem. For me, it's not worth the stress so I'm just abstaining. And I don't eat a lot of meat but I urge you to do some research on the state of the fish industry in this country. It's not well regulated, and I wouldn't advise anyone to eat a lot of it, pregnant or not.

Am I the only one who gets a laugh everytime I hear someone refer to something they read in "Panic Free Pegnancy"...

so you didn't get any information in either pregnancy about deli meat, etc?

I've never had an OB tell me to worry about deli meat. Sure, I've read "What to Expect" but I'm more concerned with fruit and veggies that come for outside the US than deli meat, thankfully its summer so I dont have to buy anything imported. I also have never been advised to not eat soft cheese (domestically, internationally I am very careful about this) rather that I should avoid unpasturized dairy products . In fact, Im eating a bologne sandwhich as I'm typing this, yum!

Not the PP, but there are many OB's who don't advise against eating deli meat. Every doctor is different.

I never had an OB tell me explicitly, but I was always given a sheet with no-nos. That being said, I actually eat deli meant and soft cheeses if they're pasteurized as well.

I was given a sheet as well but it says nothing about cold cuts or deli meat.

Why is that? I read it and the information seems legit. The theme is great - pregnancy really is treated in the US like you are a sneeze away from destroying your baby and this book gives the real stats and data on some of these "risks".

Don't stress and eat the turkey if you want the turkey. I ate every deli meat under the sun every day and my dd is fine, advanced if you will I never ate the prepackaged stuff or nuked my sandwiches.

My doc, who thinks a lot of these rules are total crap, got a good laugh out of this one when I brought it up with her.

Soft serve ice cream is on the no-no list?? Wow...I had no idea. 38 weeks now and I've been eating it like it's my job!
