Why are all the SAHMs I know fat?

Anonymous
I don't think you can blame it on something like working or staying home. Given my genetics, but more importantly my interest in nutrition and my love of exercise, I'm going to be fit and thin whatever my situation (assuming my circumstances were roughly the same - not saying if I was poor or a single mom or anything, and yes, I'm sure I'll gain some weight in my 40s and 50s, I'm just talking about right now). I WOH and I find it easy to eat healthy because we plan ahead and DH helps with cooking and food prep, I take time to plan snacks and lunches at work, I exercise during my lunch hour a few days a week, I walk to a lot of my briefings and meetings, and I'm usually busy during the day so I pull out my snacks but don't have time to really think about or do mindless eating.

If I stayed home, I would probably have as much time to meal plan and cook (we really don't need more time), I would have time to work out....the only difference is I may have more opportunities for snacking. But I can't imagine I'd be more than 5-10 pounds more than I am now.

I think it's too easy to give excuses. The SAHMs and WMs you know who are overweight would probably be that way if they were working or staying home respectively. People tend to have habits and stick with them. I have a lot of sympathy for people who are overweight regardless. Personal responsibility is important but our environment is really not set up for being healthy and I think the food industry has really done a number on a lot of people and convinced them that huge portion sizes are normal, that crap food is healthy, etc.

I would be pretty annoyed if I was a husband making all the money so my wife could stay home and she didn't take care of herself.

ALL, well most of the "office-working" moms I know have really fat butts. I guess too much sitting in the office chair and not enough chasing after their children at the playground. They probably don't bring healthy lunches to work either. I would be pretty annoyed if I was a husband that my wife can't figure out how to take care of herself, but manages to go back to work.

For me, I think it is the fact that I have access to food all day long so I snack a lot. And I feel like my son is too young to drop off at gym daycare so my only workouts are walking with the stroller. I haven't gained any weight since I have been home but I never lost the baby weight. Oh, and my husband still finds me sexy so I think I am doing okay.

Same here. Almost all of my SAHM friends are skinny. I still have a lot of baby weight to lose, but I think it'll be easier for me at home (lots of walks/runs with baby, stroller strides, etc; more time to make healthier meals) than if I was working.

I am a WOHM with a fat ass. I "managed" to go back to work for the same reason my DH works - to put a roof over our heads, and food in our mouths. Without my paycheck, our family would be homeless.

I leave the house at 7AM and return at 6PM, five days a week. I "manage" to find time to "take care of myself" (exercise) here and there but not consistently. Hence, my fat butt.

My DH isn't annoyed at all. On the contrary, he is grateful for, and proud of his hard-working wife.

I'm having a hard time thinking of one single fat SAHM that I know. The five women who come to the top of my mind when I think of "overweight" all work. 4 of the 5 also live in the in VA but that does not mean I'm going to generalize Virginians as fat.

I think a man wrote this.

I would also love to know OP's definition of fat. I am going to gander she isn't even referring to 'truly' fat ppl...but prob those of a normal range of weight as well.

I love you for your honesty.

Amen. LOL @ the poster you quoted - let me guess, she's completely supported by DH's income.

I completely read the quoted poster as satire.

I'm with you on this. Most of my SAHM friends go to the gym, run every morning, or play tennis, plus taking care of kids and doing volunteer work. In fact, they look fit and fabulous!

I am a fat SAHM. I was a fat workoholic without kids before becoming a SAHM. I like food and cocktails. I hate exercising. Not sure why care because I have a nice personality and would be pretty if I lost weight. It's true, my mom says so!

At least you sound like you would be fun unlike all the haters

Let's see - if 2/3 of the population is overweight - then both of your friends are overweight.

I'm a SAHM with 2 little kids and am at my lowest weight ever. Used to work for the government, which is much more of a fat farm than my neighborhood.

Good luck with the stereotypes!
