HS magnet/IB programs - mailing today

Sounds like society and relationship issues that occur in all community settings ---- magnet and non-magnet; employed and unemployed; workplace and playplace. The solution to these problems is not avoiding magnets or the workplace.

Who said we should avoid the magnets? I mean, besides gamer-mom, who is telling the weaklings to get out of her way. Because since there are magnets, the kids have to apply, so it's not really an option not to apply.

But the solution is not to minimize the stress on kids, with spurious comparisons with team sports and gaming. (Look! I died on screen! Now I'm coming right back to life!) Or making jokes about suicide.

And applying to magnets is more stressful than a lot of other things kids have to do, including sports. Somebody said, about on par with applying to college.

So the question being asked here is: Is this a good thing? Could stress be reduced by adding more magnets and programs that take more kids?

A magnet for every man. Not going to happen on earth. Understanding the economics of scarce resources.

Are you always this shallow and superficial? Nobody said that this. But keeping the lottery programs (instead of gutting them as Weast is doing) would provide some additional options, so that not everything is on high-stakes applications to just two magnets.

The question is, is making kids go through a college-like process appropriate for 10-year-olds. If you think it is, then say so. But tell us why this is a good thing, like "preparation for life" or something. If you think it's over the top, then say that.

Don't move to Great Britain where the kids have to take O levels and A level exams (all kids) prior to triage. You are simply a typical American whiner. The US system of education is so poor and without challenge and you're complaininng of stressed out ignorami in 10 and 11 year-olds. The 12 and 14 year-olds could not pass the 10 + exams in Great Britain. Having lived on both sides of the Atlantic i have zero sympathy for your whining and complaining about stress. Perhaps medications may accommodate you.

You sound like the troll from the Alexandria Academy thread, in tone and word choice.

The O-level and A-level exams are for university entrance, you jerk.

You are a moron. An obnoxious moron.

Exams taken by 12, 13, and 14 year-olds and not red shirted American 18 and 19 year-olds struggling with Algebra. At least all Americans have a college to go to. Not quite so in Britain. Sorry for all the stressed out American students. Many would not survive across the Atlantic or in Asia where if the bar is not met -- no college but the fields.

I suspect Alexandria Academy is another thread you've frequently contaminated with your ignorance. I shall look for it right away. Perhaps the troll you are referring to and I and get together for a cup of tea. You are most welcome to join if I can hook this up.

I am the OP, and we got our Blair letter today .... so I guess we can close this thread, right?

Go and celebrate in the streets.

Thank you for your sarcasm. I merely asked a factual question, and didn't participate in any of the fracas above.

Ahlstrom had those threads pulled.

At last report he had requested that parents not speak to his teachers.

Note that the applications to the magnet are not that onerous, and nowhere near like college applications (which we also went through this year).

And you resurrected a several-month-old thread to make an obnoxious comment like this? You're the bully, obviously.
