People can go ahead and blame Palin but the truth is this man has had it out for the Congresswoman for years. A Department of Homeland Security memo that states Loughner is "possibly linked" to American Renaissance. The Department of Homeland Security says it promotes views that are "anti-government, anti-immigration, anti-ZOG [Zionist Occupational Government], anti-Semitic." Giffords Jewish.
Loughner also attended one of Giffords events, similar to the one where the shooting took place, and had received a (form letter) thank you note from Giffords back in 2007. It also seems that Loughner had asked her a nonsensical question to which he never received an answer. I believe that he had asked her something along the lines of "How do you know words mean anything". Which is not unlike a question a young child would ask his mother. Example: "Why was the word red chosen for that color?". It's not an easy one to answer, had no relevance to anything and it would make sense that Giffords would ignore such a question. It's too bad that this seems to be what fueled the contempt Loughner had for her. Palin needs to either tone it down, or just STFU, but that doesn't mean she holds any responsibility in this case. People need to look at all of the evidence that comes in and draw a conclusion from there. Not just jump on the bandwagon and blame the wild woman who has no common sense. However, it does seem to be a good time for Palin to take a long hard look at herself and how she is coming across to others. One could only assume she doesn't want to have this type of publicity or be the one responsible for influencing a similar crime. That's a large cross to bare. Additionally, we need to look at all of this with some perspective. Blaming Palin is convenient, easy, and gives the false hope that she will just go away. Easy to jump on the bandwagon but people need to think for themselves. |
Normal people can ignore her but the nut-jobs are the ones she is collecting and calling to action. We cannot afford to ignore that. |
I find you annoying. What's with the "much"? Is that regional? |
There is a difference between "rhetoric" and something as explicit as Palin's cross hairs map. Obviously we can't hold Palin or anyone else technically or legally responsible for the actions of a nut. But politicians using violent analogies, targets, crosshairs, etc. show very poor judgement. |

The anti-Palin people are conspiracy theorists who are no better than the maniac who pulled the trigger. |
|
12:10 Typical rhetoric from a Palin sympathizer. It is no conspiracy to ask her to tell the truth -- these crosshairs represented a gun's, not a surveyor's -- and take responsibility for her actions and vow to refrain from the rhetoric.
That is one wild conspiracy! |
I'm sorry I didn't realize big brother was monitoring DCUM, but if he did, he'd know I don't have facebook either! |
How do we draw the line for free speech? |
|
I think anybody in a position of authority or who has some level of celebrity has a responsibility to be careful of the types of messages that they convey, whether it be a politician, actress, or singer. Don't we hold artists responsible for encouraging suicide in their songs to vulnerable teens and other people who are mentally vulnerable?
Inciting violence of any sort thru any medium is not protected under free speech. This catastrophe is a wake-up call to Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, and Fox News et al to be more prudent in their tactics and message. |
YES. |
John Lewis is a congressman and he heard them say it. Barney Frank says he got called F****t. Here is Fox News' account, complete with Republican apologies. It's not like the word has never been used by Tea Party leaders. http://www.mediaite.com/online/tea-party-leader-that-claimed-no-slurs-now-famous-for-n-word-sign/ This is no less than Dale Robertson holding a poster with the (ironically misspelled!) word at a rally in Houston. So given the testimony of members of congress, photographic evidence of the word being used at other rallies, and the apologies of Republican leaders, how in God's name do "prove" it never happened? I'm sure you can provide a clip where someone wasn't saying it, but you can't tape everyone. |
The double standard on this thread is just too much. Why only name conservatives? There are clearly plenty of examples of the same type of speech on the left. This was posted on the thread in the Political forum. Why didn't you list any of these people? But he only bought a gun in November. No one is making her solely responsible, but when people use violent metaphors in politics, someone is gong to take it too far, whether they are insane, or whether they are just susceptible to the belief that times are changing and violence is required. You wouldn't joke about killing a person in front of your kids, and politicians and press should not use imagery that implies it or (int the case of Fox) actually say it in front of the public. |

I think the political speak is getting out of hand and needs to be toned down. I think the Tea party added fuel to that fire over the last few years. I can't stand Sarah Palin or her mama bear followers.
I don't think any website, rhetoric, vote, etc. pushed this guy. He had some interest in her and decided to target her. We don't try to shut down churches when women say they were ordered by god to kill their own children. We don't even imprisonate them. Why? Because they're just crazy. Did anyone else see the former classmate emails in WaPo? http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2011/01/jared-loughners-behavior-recor.html |
