St. Lawrence University and Hobart William Smith

HWS is a mix of B average kids from prep schools and A kids from public schools. Significantly more competitive admission for girls. Absolutely stunning location and the local town has turned into a food tourism destination in the last decade. Strong ecology and environment sciences. Surprisingly good finance recruiting outcomes (see: prep school kids). Big emphasis on study abroad, most kids do it. Strong faculty and high expectations for faculty involvement with students outside the classroom--if your kid is academically inclined they will have all the faculty mentoring they could hope for. The debate team is indeed excellent.

Middlebury was certainly a hike to get to and, tbh, we found the remoteness, stark campus a bit depressing and that was summer....

The campus is stunning. Your stark comment outs you as never having been there. Same with your remoteness comment given that big box shopping is 30 minutes away in two directions and Burlington only 15 minutes further.

Where is the big box shopping that is 30 minutes away?

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We found Middlebury to be the most beautiful campus we toured during our New England circuit.

Maybe they're talking about the Walmart Supercenter in Ticonderoga?

Weird that you mention miles and not time. You can drive from DC to Middlebury in just over 8 hours, thanks to interstates. You can also take Amtrak or fly nonstop from DCA or Dulles to Burlington (just under an hour from Middlebury by car).

SLU is about a 10-hour drive from DC. And you have to fly into Syracuse, which is more than a 2-hour drive from campus.

Some in Rutland to the south and the Burlington suburbs (Shelburne/Williston) to the North. It’s not as remote as people make it out to be but it’s not super easy either.

Pretty much everything is one or two day from Amazon as well.

Its about 500 miles...it's not 10 hours. We did 1 day round trips to Pottsdam a couple of times during Covid. Not fun but not 20 hours

I live in Vermont. Amazon is hit or miss in terms of being delivered on time.

I went to Midd and loved it, so often want to defend the school and point out facts. But if people don't like the location or the campus, whatever. The school is not hurting for applications. The acceptance rate is under 14%

Miles are absolute; time is variable. In any case, these are the estimated drive times and tolls to these schools from D.C. as of this moment:

Middlebury: 8 hrs, 19 mins and $32.60

Saint Lawrence: 8 hrs, 36 mins and $0.00

Personally, I'd rather drive the extra 17 minutes and keep the $32.60

Somebody is looking at Google.

I have a condo at Killington and frequently makes the drive. It’s not 45 min to Middlebury and Middlebury isn’t 50 min to the Airport unless there is weather.

I went to Middlebury and have lived in Chittenden County for years. You're incorrect on both counts.

Perhaps you're a very fast and dangerous driver.

Where in Vermont? Amazon is rock solid Burlington to Rutland since the opening of the distribution center in Champlain.
