Google says Killington to Middlebury is 62 minutes. What is your deal? |
For the most recent year, Middlebury reports an acceptance rate of 17%. https://www.middlebury.edu/stories/archive/2026/04/dynamic-cohort-students-offered-admission-classes-2030-and-20305 |
I have a condo at Killington. The comment was about Rutland and daylight travel Rutland to Middlebury is 35ish min typical |
The estimated driving time from Middlebury College to the Walmart in Rutland is 47 minutes at this moment. |
| How did this thread turn into a discussion about Middlebury? Not at all what OP asked. 😂 |
Most DCUM threads go off-topic by around page 3. |

I went to HWS, sibling went to SLU.
They are good schools, high % of NE boarding school kids. Great sports, small classes and engaged professors. Both schools hit well above their weight into finance. HWS has a good architecture program, very good english department and decent econ department. Me and my sibling both have/had successful careers in finance. |
Absolutely no landscaping and Grey stone buildings just plopped around, ugly library and science building. Cafeteria was OK, but it left a lot to be desired. |
Someone hasn't been there. |
Checking in from NY's North Country. I think you can expect to hear more from SLU in your area in the future. SLU is struggling mightily with budget and enrollment. One can argue it spent too much of the past two decades coasting on its self-perceived position in the marketplace. It desperately needs to expand its geographical recruiting footprint---there are only so many 18-year-olds in Darien and Wellesley who want to come north these days. DC makes sense as it's a (long) day trip away and there are families with resources. Enjoy the buyer's market, and don't be afraid to negotiate. Do your homework, and have your kid do the same when they arrive. While not quite world-class, some programs and professionals there are really good. Others are just ok. The college is spread thin, and the value gained from the experience can vary greatly. As a side note, nearly half of the student-body are NCAA athletes. And the D3 coaches do much working with minimal (and shrinking) real resources. You can reasonably argue they're the engine making things go right now. Oral communication is an underrated and useful strength developed among its students.

| My cousin graduated SLU about 8 years ago and just married the guy she met there. She’s a super WASPY blue blood from Newburyport MA on her dad’s side but no money and she married a sweet rich Manhattan prep school. They live in Maine and she’s a teacher and he just finished law school. They both live and breathe SLU. She’s pretty introverted so not a partier and I think the culture suited her. |
I really like Middlebury but their comment is accurate if you don’t. It’s paved but it’s not manicured. The buildings are grey… |

I hope more kids from this area check out the upstate schools. They might not be as social media friendly as SECs, but they provide a solid education and give students community and connection with professors.
There are students who do not have the scores for Williams who want to attend a LAC. In the DC metro area, students in the bottom 2/3rds of the class typically attend state schools but it is good for there to be SLAC options for these students. Many of these schools offer merit or other types of discounts so the cost could be comparable to going out of state. |
Not sure but it makes sense a kid may be looking at both. Midd was my kid's reach and STL was a safety. |
