| While I don't want to "be a babysitter" I 100% understand that I have to be at the school no matter how many kids are in attendance. Sitting alone in an empty classroom is much more infuriating to me than having to deal with a dozen kids who decided to come to school those final days. We're just going to watch TV and movies probably anyway. |
School ends later this year then in recent years but next year isn't starting later. The students will only have 66 or 67 days off which is not even 10 weeks. Teachers have only 59 days, not even 2 months! Summer is getting shorter due to an antiquated Maryland school law. School breaks were already short due to the Maryland law but now summer is falling victim too! Then come next school year August 25-December 23 with a couple four day weekends but one of them is Thanksgiving which should be longer. |
Not “out of their mind” at all. I’m GenX, lived in multiple states growing up and three months (or very close) of summer vacation was normal in each of the multiple public schools I attended. Of course, that was before people demanded that public schools exist only so they don’t have to pay for or arrange childcare… |
You should be teaching. You are a teacher and that's your job. My HS kids go as that's what they are required to do by law. I'd love for it to be over now. |
We are not supposed to issue any assignments after tomorrow. I'm not assigning any work that isn't being graded. I'm not grading anything when 40% of the kids won't be there. |
Three months would be great. For ES its harder, but for HS, some of our kids work, do speciality camps, summer swim and other sports and there isn't a lot of time with just 8 weeks. Our kids go back in early-mid August for sports training and marching band. |
Catch 22 Trachers don't teach cuz kids don't come and kids don't come cuz teachers aren't teaching. I'd love it if you would grade something as a perk to those who came. |
Time to change that law to be flexible like most states. This week should be their last week. At least they eliminated the insane week of June 22-26. Because they end June 18, next year should move to August 31-June 11. |
| This Fri 6/12. No new graded work after this day. |
My kid definitely has a math final exam next Tuesday which I find entirely confusing. |
It's also incredibly stupid (especially with such short summers) that teachers have to pack everything up, take everything down, etc. when they are coming back in less than 60 days-just to take it out and put it all back up. I understand if you're moving classrooms or they are painting, but otherwise, it's sooooooo pointless. |

I think it's hilarious that in MCPS DCUM of ALL places... this thread exists. The loud, obnoxious parents who wont shut up about snow days, loss of educational time, etc....and then come to find an entire thread of parents discussing how much earlier they'll let their kids stop going. No shame.
Stay horrible, MCPS parents. It's the one thing everyone in the state can count on. |
Didn't you realize? They only care about their kids' AP tests. Once those are over, they are willing to take them out of school a week early for vacations and camps. |
I have a kid with an exam next week too. Even if she didn't, I make my kids go until the last day. |
Most of the AP classes aren't doing anything. In one, my child is the only one left. To the teacher's credit, they are starting them on next year's material. In other classes, they are working on college stuff we could do on our own. |
