When will you stop sending your kids?

Last year the last two days were the week after the scheduled end of year, so there were tons of kids who were away at prescheduled vacations or camps. That is not an issue this year so I expect attendance for the last few days will be much higher than it was last year.

That said, there's definitely a slowdown in educational content at the very end of the year (although it might be balanced out a little this year by teachers trying to get through the content given the missed snow days and shortened year)-- when/how much depends on the teacher, but I certainly would not expect much education on that last half day anywhere. But at least at the ES level, my kids enjoy whatever fun the teacher has planned for that day and wouldn't want to miss it.

+1 if we made up all the snow days and the schedule stretched into the following week, I would have sent DS to the camp we'd already booked instead

We shouldn’t be in school right now. The entire country should get on one page. Start the Tuesday after Labor Day and end the Friday before Memorial Day. Figure out how to make 180 days work in between.

You are out of your mind. Three months of summer break?! No thank you!

I’m sending my kids. If you aren’t going away and your kids don’t have camp, isn’t it better to have them at school hanging out with peers?

HS teacher here. I’ve had a few kids tell me that tomorrow is their last day for various reasons. It’s totally fine. I told them I will excuse any assignments for them after tomorrow. People have plans and things to do

DP-Nah, that is how it alwaaaaays used to be. Sorry you can't handle being a parent for three months of the year. It'd make people happier bc everyone here just whines and moans when there are random days off because they didn't think/plan ahead about childcare before having kids. That schedule would eliminate those days.

This county is truly insufferable.

We are making our last day Friday, 6/12 and going straight to the beach. Last few days of MCPS are totally pointless. Lots of teachers leave early and the ones that are there are playing movies and just having kids play computer games. Would rather enjoy the beach with my family before it gets busy!

We also prefer starting the school year after Labor Day and ending by Memorial Day. Kids should have long, fun summers while they’re young!

Same for our focus school

What a ridiculous thread. You know, this is the reason schools don't cover material the last day of school? If htey could be sure of full classrooms, they'd continue teaching. They stop teaching because parents collectively decide they're tired of their kids being in school!

Some people don’t view their children as burdens.
