When will you stop sending your kids?

The last day. Life lessons moron.
Why in the world are you asking this question?

Teachers are not babysitters.

So what? Childcare can absolutely be part of my calculus when school is open.

That is true but it's not like we can stay home if the kids stay home. I have to be at work until the 18th so I might as well have kids there to keep me busy.

I’m not sure that’s true. My kid has a number of classes where they have not assigned any work since mid May as they needed to cover all the material prior to APs plus all th seniors have been out for weeks. This thing about seniors finishing almost a month before the end of school is so weird.

I think also a lot of teachers don’t get enough paid time after the school year ends to clean classroom, finish grading etc so it seems like they always do that the last couple of days of the year regardless of how many kids are in the class.

The Middle Schooler is a rule follower, so he'll go.

They don't have anything better to do at home and they have a full 2 weeks before their camps start, so might as well close out the year.

Why are you capitalizing high schooler

You are out of your mind. Three months of summer break?! No thank you!

DP-Nah, that is how it alwaaaaays used to be. Sorry you can't handle being a parent for three months of the year. It'd make people happier bc everyone here just whines and moans when there are random days off because they didn't think/plan ahead about childcare before having kids. That schedule would eliminate those days.

This county is truly insufferable.

This is just not true. Yes school started after Labor Day for a long time but it always went into June. We never ended before Memorial Day. IME, the places that end in May have always started in August and the places that start in Sept have always ended in June. I’ve never met any public school families that have school both start after Labor Day and end before Memorial Day.

It's absolutely not true. Our elementary schooler has been doing arts and crafts during "math" even though everyone is there for weeks. ELA stopped yesterday. Teachers are stop covering material well before attendance drops.

Grade books close this Friday

No, they don't. Teachers can't assign NEW work after Friday because there's not enough time to allow makeups if kids don't turn it in. But grades don't close until June 19. My high schooler said a couple teachers are giving out bonus assignments next week for kids who need to pull up their grades -- so not required, but for kids on the cusp between a B and an A, they will want to get the free extra points.

OMG I always read about these mythical teachers on dcum and my kid never has these teachers.

I’m a teacher. This is a dumb statement. No, teachers are not babysitters. But…

If school is open, a parent can fully expect that their child is in the care of trusted adults who are (among many things) caring for their children during the school day.

Technically that's not allowed per MCPS. We are 100% forbidden from assigning "extra credit". If we assign work, it has to count for everyone and it can drop grades just as much as it raises grades.

I used to hear about mythical parents who had the ability to work with teachers to advance the education of students. I guess it's easier to work with admin to pressure teachers to just give a million retakes and boost the numbers. Kids get to high school and they can't even read then they sue the schools to the type of manipulation we are pressured to do to pass them along. This is called success until the school is sued out of its ability to pay teachers their meagers.

Thank you for this voice of reason! Those "not babysitter" posters are so tiresome.

You’re welcome. Those comments continue to expand the divide between educators and families, when we really need everyone to work together as a team to benefit the children.
