He is ten. WTF is buying him this lemonade and fast food??? he's too young to work and earn his own money. stop buying him these things. |
Uh oh. Mine is listed as an integer ABOVE 25. Like most of the population. I wonder if you've ever heard of that? |
Lots and lots of previously underweight or prematurely born babies/toddlers grow into older children who are overweight. It's definitely a phenomenon. It's very hard to let go of the idea that you need to give your child a Pediasure every day with a bowl of ice cream as a snack, to giving your kid water and low fat milk and presenting him with veggies, whole grains, and proteins and letting him decide what he's hungry for. Parents with these underweight young kids have to basically force them to eat when they aren't hungry. And they encourage them to drink calories. And then it's very hard to stop those habits, and then you also end up with a kid who is used to being bribed to clean his plate who just gets used to cleaning his plate no matter what. |

10-11 was probably when DS was his "heaviest". Then he hit 12 and lost the baby fat without really doing anything different (he's always been active and had a good diet). So some of this may just be that pre puberty weight.
But also, you are in charge of what he eats. Stop buying so much junk food and lemonade. There is no need for him to be having lemonade and fast food several times a week. And I say that as a mom whose kid does eat fast food sometimes. |
Then you’re a pig |

| I would get a new ped. Yours sounds terrible. |
+1 My husband is 5'10" tall and I am 5'2" tall. Both of our adult sons are 5'8" tall. |
This! Boys do not only get their height genes from the men in the family and girls don't only get their height genes from the women in the family. I know a family where dad and daughter are quite tall and mom and son are quite short. Daughter was taller at 11 than her brother at 13 and is still taller at 14 than he is at 16. That said, I have never heard a pediatrician recommend that a child who is still growing should lose weight. Usually it is to slow the gain as they continue to grow taller. Encourage healthy habits but please do not put your 10 year old on a diet! |
+1 Why is he consuming these things? Get them out of the house? Lemonade should be a once in a while treat and fast food should just never happen. |

Just curious, what's your PhD in? It's weird to just sign off as a PhD to call a doctor a moron, especially if your PhD is in something like civil engineering or English lit. |
Smoothies are only slightly better than lemonade. Whenever you process fruits and berries, you take out the main healthy ingredients in them (fiber) and leave fructose which causes a high insulin spike. Smoothie should be an occasional treat, not an everyday drink. He needs to get used to drinking water. |
| A smoothie is a meal not a drink. Way different than lemonade and not a replacement for water. |
