Did your doctor actually advise that your 10 y.o. should LOSE weight, or that he should maintain weight/slow gain as he gets taller? Usually it's the latter. What does your kid currently eat? How much exercise does he get? Ending up 5'7" to 5'9" would be completely unsurprising for someone with a mother and grandmother who are 5'. Not a sure thing, of course, but not at all surprising.
This! Boys do not only get their height genes from the men in the family and girls don't only get their height genes from the women in the family. I know a family where dad and daughter are quite tall and mom and son are quite short. Daughter was taller at 11 than her brother at 13 and is still taller at 14 than he is at 16. That said, I have never heard a pediatrician recommend that a child who is still growing should lose weight. Usually it is to slow the gain as they continue to grow taller. Encourage healthy habits but please do not put your 10 year old on a diet!
