Arrest made

It is interesting how once it was revealed that he is white/middle eastern, suddenly people who wanted him locked up were advocating that he just needs mental health support.

His crimes were felonies and he was escalating. His family deserves sympathy and mental health support, but he needs jail time.

Actually, I’ve seen nothing like that. Folks I’ve talked with wanted him locked up irrespective of his ethnicity/race. After locking him up, I hope he gets treatment because he’s clearly mentally disturbed.

he can get that in prison, too.

His local social network needs to be deeply investigated and monitored for the safety of kids at Whitman.

The fact that this kid knew the name means that he was into some deeply f'ed up stuff online.

If you were paying even an iota of attention, not only do you know his name, but you can see his stupid face. You don’t need to be deep into anything. What a dumb question and comparison.

+1. His name was all over the news for a long time, a lot of us know his name.

The school can suspend him and recommend a superintendent's expulsion, but the final decision is made by the district after a hearing. If he has a 504 and/or an IEP plan, they must review whether the behavior was related to a disability; that can limit expulsion but still allows placement in another program. Given the severity of the pending felony charges, MCPS will almost certainly place him in an alternative setting or expel him rather than send him back to Whitman.

If the expel him, where would he go to school? A special MCPS?

If he’s expelled, the district must still provide schooling, typically through:
An alternative education program run by MCPS (separate site, stricter structure)
A nonpublic special education or therapeutic placement if there are significant mental health needs
In some cases, virtual or home-based instruction on a temporary basis

Does the above exist?

+1 should be school top priority now

The kids that targeted their elementary schools in the past experienced serious trauma at those schools. My heart goes out to the family and the community but it makes me worry about Bradley Hills and what went on there. Bullying? Abuse?

So people all of a sudden stopped talking about it on this thread once they found out the perpetrator?

What makes you think everyone found out the perpetrator? It hasn’t been reported in the press and I have no idea who it is. Do you know if they found any guns at his house? That would affect my view of the situation but I continue to think this kid needs a lot of mental health support. Not adult jail.

DS at a different MCPS HS told me some news he heard about this boy that is incredibly disturbing. I don’t know if it’s true but if it is, this is beyond juvenile services. He should be charged as an adult. I don’t know why the police aren’t releasing more facts about the investigation. It would quell the rumors if they are untrue. I do feel very sorry for his parents.

Were you two when Sandy Hook happened? It's not the same as adults knowing about him.

I mean, this kid terrorized an elementary school, frightened kids and parents, and committed arson. I think it's reasonable that the community is curious.

You know an arrest was made. That seems to be all the information that anyone actually needs. Unless we plan on organizing a lynch mob.

You clearly haven't been spending the week educating your elementary schooler on school shootings because they are under a threat. It is actually pretty pertinent information about where he lives, etc. if you're considering risk.
