Storm tomorrow? Early closures?

They send an update yesterday saying they’ll make a call later, leaving families wondering and putting working parents in limbo. They just sent an email canceling after school activities but then leave the door open for another update by 11:00 AM. They leave parents waiting and unable to plan while they wait until the last minute to make a final call.

They are closing at 1.

I don’t mind how they communicated about it. They made the best decisions they could with the info they had each time, with the caveat that it’s a developing situation and things might change.

If you weren’t aware last night even before the first notice went out that you should be preparing to potentially pick up your child between noon and 1, you weren’t paying attention.

Same at Holton. Except that the update is by 10:00am.

The problem with schools making a decision early to close, is that sometimes the weather forecast changes and the predicted bad weather turns out to be a nothingburger. And then people are frustrated their kids are home watching TV and they have to miss work while it's sunny and clear. I'm not faulting the public systems for making the call last night but I also understand schools wanting to see what's happening.

For that matter, some parents at our younger kid's public school are saying they might pick up even earlier than the early dismissal time since the weather might be bad by 1:00. So schools also needed to decide if they need to close even earlier.

Who said parents weren't aware? It wasn't like I was shocked to hear about the weather event. They always wait and wait and wait. They can never just make a call and stick with it. They are going to have annoyed parents no matter what they do so I know it's not an ideal position but have some courage to make a call so people can plan their work schedules.

You said you were waiting and unable to plan. My point was you perfectly well could have been planning, knowing there was a chance of an early closure.

If you mean you couldn’t formally notify your office, sure. But all the businesses in this area are aware of the situation too. If you had a meeting conflict, you could have proactively given a heads-up or even gone ahead and rescheduled. It’s not hard to plan for 2 or 3 contingencies.

Thanks for telling me how to function as a working adult. Next time I'll just clear my entire afternoon waiting around to find out if there is going to be an early pick-up and when exactly pick-up is going to be. You probably work at the school so that's why you think everything is so great.

Oh my. You are a damned if you do or damned if you don’t person. I wonder what would satisfy you.

First there was no after school activities are canceled wait and see about classes email. My Holton after school activity was canceled at the same time today (thihgh I had the intelligence to assume nothing was happening for sure after 3 last night per weather predications stating things are ramping up around 5.

You’ll never be satisfied with what administration does. I APPRECIATED the heads up last night and arranged my day appropriately. It allowed me to be prepared in case there was early dismissal. They sent a text before 10 stating the situation and then the email came. What more do you want? If you’re in an office and can’t get to school etc you had the time last night to ask another family to help out if need be. And I know this community well…there’s no way someone wouldn’t help you out if you reached out last night. There should not have been any “scrambling”

You ALSO had the possibility of keeping your kid(s) home unpenalized if you so chose…they said that last night. So don’t complain about this effecting your day. It’s the weather, and it changes frequently. My vet didn’t give me a heads up that they might close early today, and, they let me know at 10 they were closing at noon and to reschedule my appointment. Am I hopping onto Yelp to slam them? No.

Also, I’m happy they didn’t cancel bc I want my kids in school as much as possible.

I wonder if you are one of the couple insane posters who have to criticize every little thing the school does rather than just leave. Oh and don’t give me but my kids like it and I don’t. Then don’t crap on the school your kids love. Or be the adult and make these decisions like schooling yourself.

Simply put, Holton has done an excellent job with communication for today’s storm. If you can’t see that I think you need to look inward and try to understand why you need to live in the negative.

OMG, you NEED that input bc you clearly can’t manage flexibility. You probably work in a paper pushing agency where agility isn’t a pre-requisite.

Nope don’t work at the school. Just a working parent like who who has managed this smoothly.

Would that have made you happy when an unexpected tornado warning came through at 3?

Um, hi, thanks for answering for me but I’m not sure why you’d pretend to be a previous poster when you’re not.

But no, to the person I was actually in conversation with, I don’t work at any school. I’m literally a paper pusher government contractor. It’s still not hard to let coworkers know I’ll need a little flexibility because school might let out at 3 or it might let out at 1.

As it turned out, the government branch I work for closed its building at 2 and required all onsite employees to leave by then.

Everyone knew this was happening. You did not need to clutch your pearls about the school not making an immediate decision in order to handle this.

Wow. Take a chill pill. You sound unhinged.

I was just pointing out that Holton was taking a similar approach to the school mentioned previously. How you went from there to asking my family to leave Holton is beyond puzzling.

The person responsible spends all their time here finding any/every Holton or Holton HOS related post and responds similarly, usually disparaging anyone who says anything even remotely negative about the school and especially the HOS
