If student organizers approached school administrators and recieved permission I see no problems with a student walk out. As a matter of fact, I encourage it as a valuable lesson in civics and 1st Amendment rights. Approval of such events does not automatically mean endorsement so I wouldn’t think much of the “school sponsored politics” angle.

Will you be ok if MAGA supporting students walk out? Politics do not belong in schools. Do not brainwash the kids (i neither dem or rep)

They can walk out … and keep walking.

Agree. I saw them as I was driving by and tears came to my eyes. My dd participated and guesses 75% of students did based on what teachers said. I watched the videos and this was not kids cutting class.

Thank you so much for sharing this IG link. Got me teary-eyed as well. I’m so proud of these kids for standing up for what’s right.

Kids holding posters F*uck Ice? Are you proud of such language?

Bethel School District v. Fraser (1986) did rule in favor of schools when it came to students using vulgar and profane language. If people have that much of an issue with teenagers cursing, feel free to take it up with administration. However, without a very clear and published student code of conduct in place that strictly forbids the use of swear words, I doubt you have much of a leg to stand on. You want to punish these kids for saying F*ck Ice? You better punish every kid who curses in the hallway. Do we have the means to place EVERYONE in In School Suspension over a swear word?

I do think students need to be held responsible for using profanities. MCPS is raising a crowd that think they are entitled to everything without 0 responsibility.

Trump's TikTok presidency should not be validation to behave in the same way.

A principal typically sends out a message stating it is not school sponsored or something along those lines

they've all been marked absent, don't get your panties in a twist

If 75% participated as indicated up thread, and MCPs had a two hour delay (which means each class is much shorter), how do students who were so concerned about AP class get the instruction today at a school participating in this activity?

My DS participated, too. He estimated that about 1,000 kids participated, which would be about 40% of students. I’d be surprised if it was that large, but it does sound like it was in the hundreds, which is amazing.

My DC participated as well. I drove through it - there were definitely hundreds of kids. I got teary eyed watching them walk down Wisconsin with thoughtful signs.

They are speaking to the POTUS in the only type of language he understands. Savvy.

Pretty sure I’ve heard the president and his cabinet members use such language and worse, so I’m not really worried about my high schooler saying it in this case.

The Supreme Court disagrees with you on numerous cases.

Can you please elaborate?

You shouldn't ask parents in the Bethesda community to. Majority are lawyers. They know their shit.

Nothing. They have Freedom of Speech.

We would think they were idiots, but their rights are their rights.

MAGA don't really understand that we aren't like you. We don't keep twisting the truth and the rules as it suits us. It's called having principles. I wish you would try it.

I'm not even a lawyer. I'm just a teacher who paid attention in Civics class and college courses dealing with education and student rights.

Exactly. I received an email from school telling me my DD was marked absent without an excuse for part of the day.

Then you are not different from Maga, just on the other side of the spectrum.
I really hope we have a leader that will unite rather than polarize the population. All the left and right extremists can continue fighting each other and leave us normal people alone. Im so sorry for the kids that are brainwashed on both sides. So sad that this country is falling apart

Explain to me what behavior demonstrated by these students would qualify as being brainwashed? Do we need to brainwash a teenager into feeling that denying citizens and non-citizens their due process rights is unconstitutional? Do we need to brainwash them into understanding that a badge doesn’t give someone the right to execute a person without a trial? These seem like common sense arguments and strong American values to me. But what do I know? I am just a Marine who spent 8 years fighting for and defending this US Constitution.
