Lindsey Vonn

She did earn her spot. They also don't do replacements in skiing, so, she wasn't taking someone else's opportunity. If she didn't compete, the spot would have just been open. I don't know if it makes sense to compete on a ruptured ACL. Probably not a choice I would have made in her place, but, I would never be a downhill skier anyway. You have to have outsized confidence and ego to excel in this sport.

My kids are competitive ski racers, and they have a French coach who was an Olympian and skied the Olympics with no ACL. It is not unheard of!

BS
She qualified fair & square! Haven’t you watched her World Cup races this season?

Did she race those on a shredded ACL?

Yes, people get injured or make errors on runs all the time. Her US teammates finished 1st and 4th which is an extremely strong showing. Vonn had dominated the races earlier in the season and more than earned her spot.

I know she earned her spot! I’m not denying that - and I’m bummed she crashed out.

And I’m excited we got our first gold still! I can be both.

She completed training runs with excellent times yesterday. Stuff just happens.

LV is so inspirational, I love her. She earned her spot. I'm bummed she crashed out, but it happens.

This!
Very choppy snow already entering that turn and her aggression seemed to hook her up in the rut really hard which carried her into the gate.

Of course its related. You think if she had stable knees and no pain she might have had better control and not clipped a gate on the first place? Because I’m guessing that’s exactly what happened.

I was responding to someone saying she selfishly took a spot. She earned it & completed her training runs w/o issue.

I heard they're worried about heavy snow on the men's downhill too.

We can all speculate all we want.
Are you a alpine racer, physio or orthopedist?

Men’s DH took place yesterday.

Folks, skiers are crazy adrenaline junkies. Breezy Johnson, who won gold in this event, competed without her parents present because her dad is recovering from a ski injury last month. Half the downhill skiers have some kind of injury like this in their past or, like Vonn, multiple such injuries.

I think it's crazy but I think downhill skiing is crazy.

I don't personally find Vonn's decision to compete in these Olympics inspiring -- it seems dumb to me. But I doubt she cares about my opinion.

I do think it's cool how long she has competed at such a high level, into her 40s. I always love to see people show longevity in these sports, I think it's impressive. But competing on a torn ACL and then crashing out almost immediately. Seems lame. Oh well.

My uncle is a Physical Therapist in ski country who specializes in rehabbing skiing injuries. My uncle keeps adding staff and can't keep up with all the demand.

It's a sport with a massive injury and crash rate. There were 3 crashes in the women's downhill and two of them (incl. Vonn) required them to stop so they could airlift the skiier out. And that's not really abnormal, especially when the conditions are a certain way.

Skiiers trash their knees and snowboarders trash their shoulders.
