UVA-Mcintire

I heard job placements in consulting are pretty even across McIntire, Econ major, and Batten. Does that sound at all right?

Right, but everyone knows Wharton is the business school. And not the arts college.

It's only somewhat harder, and proportional to how much harder it is to get into the top schools.

I was looking at BBA and MBA info in the 1980s. Penn State had difficulty/capacity controls on the business school then. Maybe not as hard but not "come on in" either. And it was less well-regarded then. The Honors College set up a Meet 'n' Greet with an alum who made a ton in a Wall Street job. He actually had the nerve to tell us that we couldn't replicate his feat because there wasn't much room for PSU kids due to school prejudice. Very uninspiring talk.

This is not new.

For several decades, STEM majors and Nursing majors have been expected to know early in HS that they planned STEM or Nursing. It is needed in order to take the right HS courses to be accepted.

For decades, many undergrad business schools have been direct admission. McIntire has been in the minority of undergrad business schools for decades because it is not direct admit.

I heard a rumor W&M is considering making Mason direct admit so I imagine UVA will follow if so

Highly doubt UVA cares much what W&M does.

Plenty of people who apply to both for business. McIntire and WM Mason are both sub 25% acceptance rates currently meaning a lot of people who are very set on studying business may get turned down. UVA isn't going to want to risk losing students to W&M who might want that guarantee.

I thought they were closer to 50%.

I've been going off the Poets and Quants numbers since W&M officially uses that one on it's website - assume UVA's is also correct.

The admission rate for enrolled students applying is around 50%.

Poets and Quants is trying to compare schools that direct admit with those that don't. For schools with direct admit, there is obviously one admission rate. For schools that don't, two admissions are required (to the college and then to the business school). I believe Poets and Quants uses the product of the those two admissions.

The admission rate for enrolled students is now ~40%, the 50-60% is from when you applied at end of second year for a third year start. In 2025, admission to McIntire was changed to apply at end of first year, which reduced prerequisites and therefore increased applicants. A very strong GPA is needed, but not a guarantee since it’s holistic

This article has it at 50%. https://www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2025/03/the-business-of-a-competitive-major-program

Regardless of that, I was just trying to explain that Poets and Quants typically reports a lower rate for schools that are not direct admit. They are factoring that you have to be accepted twice.

That has 2024 admission data, not 2025. In the article it says “last year’s admission data”. The article was from March 2025, last years admits didn’t occur until summer 2025

Makes sense, although less than 50% odds aren't great still. I have heard of students at both schools transferring out after they didn't get into McIntire/Mason. If one school goes direct admit I would be shocked if the other doesn't follow pretty immediately. Definitely in competition for a lot of the same students and at least for those who go off of P&Q rankings they're not that differently ranked anymore.

I suspect they survey students that are accepted but choose to go elsewhere and they see lack of direct admit as a factor. Historically, the faculty of arts and sciences try to push back against direct admit, but they are losing power. I think there is something to be said for having a more well-rounded education, but that now probably a minority view.
