About the same way. I know a bunch of girl and boy Kirans too.

100% on all this

Ok, but we are Italian and an Irish first name would sound legit dumb! Same as naming a kid Domenico Malarky.

Ok, so don't name your kid that. My kids have a german last name, and Kieran would sound just fine to me paired with it. You don't get to make up dumb rules that give the Smiths broad license to name their kids whatever the heck they want, while calling everyone else dumb for doing the same.

I mean... it goes the other way around too. I've seen more people say that you can't have an overly "ethnic" (when they really just mean not Anglo) first name paired with a standard Anglo last name. Giuseppe Smith, Gustav Johnson, or Hans White would probably get a lot of criticism on DCUM. The criticism would actually be worse and more harsh because claims of cultural appropriation would be thrown around!

We all could work on becoming more open-minded.

Is it I before E except after C and K?

Hans White sounds cool. I don’t think over ever met a Hans who wasn’t white

It’s a great name (when not butchered), though!

Seriously…how do people not know about I before e?

(I don’t understand why some people spell their Kiera girl names Keira. Makes no sense to me whatsoever, but yeah, I guess I overestimate people knowing that I comes before e except after C…)

Because most names with these two letters together are Jewish and somehow they always have the E first

This x1000. I saw someone on here say that naming your kid Greta (as a WASP American) is cultural appropriation. 🙄

Just curious: If the child has a name that reflects the mom's ethnic heritage, but has the dad's last name of a different ethnic background, is that also dumb?

Well, the people of DCUM make sure to differentiate between Anglo white and every other type of white because people aren't already divided enough as is (note the sarcasm). I'm not even sure if they realize that you don't have to be of English descent to be white.

It will get spelled wrong.

Keer-ran (but sounds more like keer-in)

Kieran Culkin was my first thought! I certainly like it more than Macaulay as a name.

Same. Love the Irish boy name Kieran (don’t think it will be misspelled much). And the male turned unisex Sanskrit name Kiran.

Same - but a girl, since it's a gender neutral name in my different culture (Northern India).

I think it's a great name - either the Indian or Irish version.

Only downside is Karen as a misnaming/nickname, but I can't think of a single name that doesn't have a teasing risk. Maybe spelling as well, but again, that's an issue with almost any name!

It’s a nice name.

Reminds me of Kieran Culkin.

It’s pronounced Keer-in.
