This "cover your plate" stuff is not a real rule of etiquette. It has some value to the extent it's geared at clueing in people like cheap-ass aunt Larla who is worth 8M but brings a $20 pepper mill to the wedding, wrapped in white paper with a white bow.

If I’m not invited I’m not close enough to the couple to give a gift. That goes for coworkers too.

A lot goes into a wedding gift consideration. How old are they, how much did they spend on the event? I’m not giving some cheap gift to someone who invited me somewhere fancy. Also not giving a gift at all to a younger couple, I’d give them cash because that’s what they really need and want. Older couple with a backyard wedding reception are probably getting a cheaper gift from me.
