MC Silver Spring/Takoma Parks offers all of the health science degrees and certificates.

One of my friends' kids wants to study sonography after high school. Community college is the route she's taking.

My HS kid is currently there for DE math. Her professor teaches the exact same class -- same syllabus, same exams, all of it -- at UMD.

It’s pretty common for professors to teach the same class at both two year and four year colleges using all of the same materials. MC is not an inferior education.

To the PP who says everyone can take classes, that isn’t correct. To get a degree you have to either pass preadmission testing or pass a prerequisite English and Math class. And certain classes are open only to people in the program.

Besides being a pipeline into a four year school and an excellent and less expensive means to get a degree from UMD, MC has trade programs that can lead to either a certificate or a degree depending on the path the student chooses.

And the process tag is so reasonable. It is actually a place where a student can earn enough to pay the cost.

Exactly! And it's not just common for the same profs to teach, but MC must align their courses with UMD so that credits transfer seamlessly. The curriculum and rigor must be very similar or the courses at MC would not hold the same value. The courses are rigorous enough to count as transfers at any other 4 year college in the country. I am a professor at MC and I have sent my syllabi to mutliple T10 and T20 schools for my students to get their transfer credits when they leave MC.

I imagine that this is especially true where there are specific transfer and articulation agreements in place -- both Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech have a couple of such agreements with MC -- or in the case of guaranteed admission programs.

One big advantage of community college is that the professors are focused on teaching, not research or publishing like they often are at large R1 universities. Also, class sizes tend to be relatively small and in my experience, the professors are very accessible for questions, help, etc.

For people who are not looking for a college degree, they also offer a lot of non-degree classes.

DDs classes have often been 16-20 kids. Smaller than most colleges and universities and definitely smaller than the public high school.

Also I’m loving seeing all the love for Montgomery College. It is not the right fit for everyone, but offers great value and opportunity for the right person.

This area is great for community college options whether you’re in MD or VA. Both MC and NVCC/NoVa are very strong.

I have my associates in photography from there. My teacher from back then, Mr. Warren, wrote the book we used and it was used to teach photography in many well respected universities. He was tough, but he was an incredible instructor.

Fun fact…Tori Amos went to MC for a period of time.

DS went there and transferred to UMD (guaranteed admission). He said classes were of the same rigor as UMD and MC teachers were actually better.

We're lucky to have a resource like MC here.

Most students in the county aren't gunning for spots at Ivy league colleges. MC provides a pathway to higher education for the much wider range of students who don't have the money, grades or time to go a 4-year college right away.

Tuition and fees are about 1/3 of a MD state school.

I don’t realize Montgomery College has a great reputation. I’ve heard a lot of good things about NOVA Community College, and it seems like a fairly respectable choice in Virginia
