I know Tori has gone through her ups and downs and needed to be limited in terms of what kind of money she would get, but Candy basically had Tori on some tight ass allowance and cut her off from the vast majority of family’s money. That’s partly why she stayed with that horrible ex-husband of her Dean for so long. And tried to please him by having five kids with him. And that’s why she did so much reality television a few years ago.

Candy’s ugly on the inside too.

It's crazy that any mom who is that rich would make their kid suffer like that. I'm sure if Aaron was alive, he wouldn't have let Tori basically move into a trailer for lack of funds. What parent would want that?

Apparently their dynamic was that Tori was a Daddy's girl, the ultimate Hollywood princess, and Tori and Candy had that toxic but not unheard of mother/daughter dynamic where Candy was jealous of Tori and her relationship with her father. Aaron probably didn't really catch onto this and assumed Candy loved her daughter and would be fair, but Candy all of a sudden had a ton of leverage she hadn't had once he died and probably enjoyed being vindictive. It's a little poor little rich girl but they kind of raised a monster that way and then Candy tore the rug out from under her when she was obviously totally ill equipped to go it on her own.

Even though she's 80, Candy has always been prettier than her daughter Tori.

Oh please. Tori is an adult and her dad left her close to a million dollars. Her mother paid her rent and private school for the kids. Tori had a major spending issue and blew through any money she had. I remember reading once about how spending 100k in one shopping trip wasn’t uncommon for her. She is an adult and capable of being responsible and not needing an allowance at all. She made her own decisions and her own choices in life. And the consequences are all on her.

+1 I agree. Tori is not entitled to her parents’ fortune. No one is. Parents can decide to do whatever they want with their money.

It’s a little different to inherent $800k when your parents net worth is 1/2 a billion dollars and your parents at one point had the largest house in California. She should never have to work, and it’s both Aaron and Candy’s fault that they never made it clear to her that she wasn’t getting any real inheritance or support. I mean, she was on her father’s tv show as a teen and young woman. What’s she supposed to do, strike out on her own and get some stupid $50k or $100k a year job?

I mean, my net worth is $2M, proportionally that’s like me leaving my kids $4,000.

Candy sux and frankly so does Aaron. I do blame them.

I agree with this. Basically the parents did not prepare her for life in the real world without their money and then all of a sudden candy takes the money away? It’s a bait and switch, setting her up for major failure and her grandkids too.

It’s very possible to tell your kids when they are growing up, we will help you get into the door of Hollywood and things but when you’re in your 20s, you will need to for the most part support yourself. It doesn’t seem like Tori was ever told this and then Candy switched the will against Aaron‘s wishes when he was not capable of making decisions any longer.

It’s a bizarre kind of cruelty. Sure Tori takes some of the blame, but she just was simply not equipped.

Parents are not obligated to give their money to their children regardless of net worth, but I guess I agree that kids should know in advance if they're not getting it. Either way, kids should have something in their life, be it work or hobbies, that fulfills them, and they need to know how to live within whatever means they have. Money alone won't do that, and a lack of money means it's a necessity.

+2. Aaron left Candy a staggering amount of wealth. Think about all the kids running around Hollywood with their parents money. Tori was treated much differently than her peer group and yeah she had spending problems, but I think all of her issues were compounded by the estate drama.

Also, yes she got the job as Donna bc she's a nepo baby but by all accounts she worked as hard as everyone else and people loved that character. It's not like she did zero. I think Tori would be a much different person today if the estate had been handled differently. She was treated like garbage by her mom. Who cares about the private school tuition??? That's a common thing for parents to pay for at net worths much lower than the Spellings.

I think Tori also bears responsibility at this point. I also have really immature, crappy parents, and at some point you have to just recognize this is the hand you were dealt and then do the hard work to parent yourself and do right by yourself and your own kids.

However, yes, it's very clear they were awful parents and it's not exactly surprising she has so little personal resilience. What they actually should have done is make sure that the money she made on 90210 was intelligently invested and taught her financial smarts and how a rich person can turn the money they have into more money without ever having to get a regular job. Instead Tori learned to burn through money fast and was taught to sell herself in order to get more money, which actually worked okay for a time between her book, reality show, endorsements, etc. But now she's middle aged and has little to no star power and that isn't cutting it.

She should have developed some self awareness along the way to help her figure it out and it's sad she hasn't. They did wrong by her but she's also done wrong by herself.

At least she can probably have a good laugh about this ridiculous "photo" of her mom. I bet she's enjoying reading the online commentary making fun of Candy.

I hope that Candy was trying to prevent Tori’s ex from having access to her wealth (since she realized the marriage would end at some point), but she will ultimately make sure both her kids and all her grandchildren are provided for.

Tori and her kids would definitely benefit from trusts…

Tori’s brother got the same initial 800k that Tori did and I think a lot less since as Tori has continued to have her mother pay her rent and kids school tuition etc .

It seems a lot of posters don’t think women are capable of looking after themselves at all or being accountable as adults for their own decisions. I really hope someday we move past this idea that women need their fathers and husbands to take care of them as they couldn’t possibly know or learn how to look after themselves.

And let’s not act as if Tori didn’t work hard. She is a hustler. She was one of the first stars to make reality TV successful. She had that “so notorious” show for a couple seasons that did ok where she played an exaggerated version of herself and then she pivoted and had that bed-and-breakfast reality show with her husband when the kids were really little, and then when that went away, they pivoted again, and I think I had another reality show about their marriage.

She’s also been steadily working in lifetime and TV movies, I think she had a podcast for a while. I mean, the woman is willing to work.

Absolutely she’s made some bad choices. It was clear she was never taught about money, but that should have been rectified long before it was. And it was clear she thought she was going to always have hundreds of millions and that was a rug that was pulled out from under her - and she really didn’t need to have five kids.

So I’d say it’s a mixed bag, both her and her mother have made bad choices. But Tori has always worked and what has candy done? I did the math and it looks like she got together with Aaron at 20. She’s never held down a job or had to work a day in her life.
