Reach/Target/Likely list - any thoughts?

Yes, and it's a total crap shoot with regards to who gets a shot and as finance gets increasingly popular each year, the traditional STEM types (i.e the grinders, super smart kids) are applying for and getting the business spots. So the finance bros (smart but not your academic outliers) are getting cut out and are stuck being econ majors in A&S.
Nothing wrong with this but don't count on a business spot. I have a few UVA kids and have watched/am watching this happen.

The business program at PSU is a much harder admit than other programs.

Yeah I would call PSU a target, not a likely. It’s really no one’s likely, especially not a boy business major.

My DS is at CNU and loves it. Similar stats to your child OP. He was IB and in state for Virginia. He preferred it over UVA and W&M. UVA was bigger than he liked, but enjoyed a lot of other aspects.

He was invited to apply to Wasson at CNU which would also “cover” the political science side of your question. It creates a second major as well, in Leadership. The students get to meet a lot of local to Virginia political leaders. You can Google for more info.

The business school is not as well known as some of the others but the teachers are good. The connections are there, but not on a national level.

The business club is selective but if you get in there are a lot of connections to be made there.

I don’t think Georgetown and UVA are realistic reaches with a 1490 4.2 from the dmv.

I would Ed either usc or wake. Wake would be a good Ed he would probably get into.

Our school's naviance says otherwise re: UVA. Like I said in my original post, the highest GPA possible at our school is in the 4.4 range (and that's upon graduation, not when you apply) because we don't offer a lot of AP classes.

Still, 1490 is what percentile SAT for UVA?

NP. Per the 24-25 CDS, 1490 would be between 50th and 75th percentiles with 45.6% submitting SAT and 13.8% submitting ACT.

Villanova would only be a potential reach if you don’t ED. 60% acceptance rate for ED, more than half the current students ED’d. They just play that whole northeastern/tulane game to boost their rates

Pitt tracks interest, specifically visits/tours. If you can work in an official tour, AND your son applies in August (do not let this slide), then it’s a safety for him.
If he gets a quick response and likes the school, he can then cull his list of schools he doesn’t like as much.

My daughter loved her tour and got in Sept 10 of her senior year - her list shrunk quite a bit after that!

My DD and many others got into to Pitt without visiting. But we did do an online thing to show DI.

I assume you’ve done an official W&M visit but if not, I’d prioritize that. Especially one of their longer programs.

Yep-if kid really wants Biz, look into their business school admissions details. Not direct admit.

Darla at UofSC is really good and probably a target.

Agreed, that's why look into direct admissions programs business. Harder admit but alteast once you are in, you are set.

IMO, Cornell dyson, nyu stern, Georgetown mcdonough are much better business programs than UVA for finance.

Agree. 75th percentile last fall had a 4.5 and a 1510.

I would add IU Kelly and Tulane (EA) as targets. Very different environments, but might get decent merit at both.
