He doesn't have any money. He's 26 and only just got kicked off our health insurance.

He doesn't have a secret drug habit, he works 5 days and nights at a hospital. They drug test. Where would he gamble

Maybe we can move on to the "how often do you change your sheets" part of the daily list to check off so we can start the conversation about how dirty Americans are. Or something

It's not really even about my son. I'm mad at my ex but there's no dedicated divorce forum for venting, so.

Y'all have a good night whatever time zone you're in

Is this another New Yorker hijacking DCUM? lol. I've ran across weird posts lately all from New Yorkers... I think there is a section on DCMU for you all.

Also, if you want to vent about your ex-husband there is a forum about relationships...

Why is it your ex's fault that your 26 year old son can't afford a new car??

And why is the dumbass taking an uber to work for 140 a day? Why doesn't he take public transport? Or rent a car?? Renting a car costs way less than 140 dollars a day!

You and your son sound dumb.

You know what costs even less? Financing a used car. Buy a used car for $15,000. The car payment will be less than what he is currently spending on Uber for two days.

So his dad's alive and living in a penthouse and his dad is dead and left him a truck?

I have empathy for the car situation. Bought my first one for 1k but that's not possible anymore. You'd have to finance which might be tricky if not a lot of credit history, or buy outright but nothing very unusual about a young person not having 15k+ for a car. And depending on where op is, public transportation may not be a possible solution. I'm more surprised about the ds not having money for food, the op saying she expects her ex to pay for stuff but she has the same amount of money and will not help, the ds coming so late at night...

Don’t car rental places rent cars by the month? Or could he buy a beater to tide him over for a few months? I cannot imagine spending $140 for Uber every day.

There’s something off about that choice.

What happens when he asks his dad?

Does he make exactly enough to only pay rent ?

I am unclear why someone working full time as a nurse can’t afford food.

not OP, but Dad is alive and the truck is dead. The Dad gave his old vehicle to the son when he didn't need it anymore.

Sometimes people use the word "inherited" figuratively to describe a situation like this. I don't know how common it is, but it's not entirely uncommon.

If you want him to have a car and he's mismanaging his money, you buy it. How will he pay for insurance, gas and maintenance? Why should your ex buy a 26 year old spoiled adult a car?

Family history of mental illness makes daily life a struggle

I’d offer to loan him money to buy a used car without financing at the dealer, if at all possible. He probably is too young to rent a vehicle unfortunately. Hope things get better!

He should live with other young people next to the hospital and just work as much as possible until he saves up.

How about if he just used his uber money toward a car payment instead?

Allowance???

Is there no public transport?? Or a rental car? Is he dumb?

I'm not that smart in math, but $140 a day for Uber to go to work every day equals $2800 every month.

Why doesn't he just lease a Bentley or Porsche or Maserati? It'd be much cheaper. And with his leased Bentley, he could afford food.
