If you had a surprise newborn, what things would you need for the first week at home?

Yes, that’s the plan. We are just trying to figure out what the new baby needs.

You said that you just had a baby so why do you need to ask? It sounds as though no one knows what they are doing. Why can't the parents go back to their home today where all that is needed would be warm outfit for infant and diapers for the trip home. Unless, of course, home is not in the US and this is a planned anchor baby!

They live in the US and drove to mom’s mother, also in the US, about 5 hours away for Thanksgiving. Baby is slightly premature and still in the hospital.

We also adopted with literally no warning. We needed hardly anything. We needed a car seat, diapers and a change of clothes to leave the hospital, bassinet for sleeping, lots of formula and bottles. I went to target the day after he was born and bought some things but it was amazing how little he needed.

I just wanted to say that what you are doing is so nice but I also wanted the chance to pick out my own baby things. I actually wouldn’t have wanted everything purchased by someone else. What would have been nice is a gift certificate for a couple months later, when I was more settled and wanted to set up a cute little nursery for him.

As an aside, I just looked up while I was typing to see that “baby,” who is now 6’2” and towers over both of us, lol.

If the baby is in the hospital, you need nothing but a few diapers, a few warm sleepers and a car seat. Parents need to get home as soon as baby is released to their home and pediatrician.

Because this is not their first child, they have almost all the things at home. They just need some things to tide them over during the time between when baby leaves the hospital to go to Grandma's and when baby and mom are cleared to travel home. Dad does not want to leave the hospital to go shopping, because he is concerned about bringing germs back to a baby who is a little more vulnerable. Because none of us have pumped for such a young infant before, I thought I would ask moms who had experience with that.

Diapers
Formula
Car seat
Safe place to sleep

That’s pretty much it.
