What SAT score/GPA/ and # of AP will give you a reasonable shot at a top 20 college from a NOVA public school?

1500, 3.85/4.6, 12 AP?

Well two years ago my 1560, 3.98/4.5, 9 AP+2DE kid was denied by 2 ivies and WL at UVA and NEU...

Expected…without more. This is the holistic view and why other posters said you need more than just scores.

Im aware jackass. Thread is about scores. Didnt ask for resume.

Then your answer should have been: “No definitive line.”

And you’re unkind.

Appropriate response to the condescending, know it all post.

Looking at the current (2026) US News T20:
My kid was 3.96 UW/ 4.44 W, 11AP/3 DE (DE all college level math), 1510 SAT (790M, 720V) not superscored. Large NOVA public with lots of high achievers.

Applied to 7 on the T20 list. Admitted to 2. Attending one of those.

For anyone who cares about citation, U.S. News doesn't provide a general T-20 list.

Most use the “national universities” as the main reference.

There are a lot more 1500s and 34 ACTs than the numbers suggest. Once you consider multiple tests and super scoring, the numbers go way up. My kid took the test 4 times and never cracked 1500 in a single sitting, but super scored 1510.

T20s seem more or less out of reach for a public school kid with his stats (3.95 UW 12 APs). So FWIW even with the typical grades and double digit APs my DS is not looking at any usnwr T20 universities. A few T15 SLACs as low reaches and then T20-T40 schools

Applies to UVA ED … no where near the gpa mostly accepted by UVA …. this will be our biggest reach. Only the SAT score is good enough.

I bet UVA would have admitted if ED. This is a common mistake.

Going to UVA is a common mistake as well.

cant emphasize this enough!

For engineering folks pick UVa due to reputation over VT and UMD, North Carolina State University. Very un informed.

disagree, lot of uva engineering students have a huge advantage when it comes to recruitment because they place well in tier 1, bulge bracket consulting firms and wall street hedge funds. you don't get that recruitment opportunities at the other schools listed. thats primarily because they have better on campus recruitment and clubs that help.

Ignorant post. My DS picked UVA aerospace engineering over Purdue and Ga Tech (V tech not even considered). High stat/s kids pick UvA for very good reasons. DS was taught by an astronaut, did brilliantly and went right in to executive management. You did know that engineers who go to UVA engineering tend to enter the engineering field as higher paid managers than grunt workers? Of course you didn’t know that, did you?

NP.

Hopefully for your student a parent interview is not required. Worry about recommendations if your child is like you. You cannot hide that entitled attitude.

What in the world are you talking about? This was an applicant from 3 years ago. Wake up.

DP. You sound insufferable - and have repeated the tale of your son many times before.
