What SAT score/GPA/ and # of AP will give you a reasonable shot at a top 20 college from a NOVA public school?

1500, 3.85/4.6, 12 AP?

Well two years ago my 1560, 3.98/4.5, 9 AP+2DE kid was denied by 2 ivies and WL at UVA and NEU...

Where did they end up?

Ended up with 8 acceptances. Attending UMD with some merit. CS major. Loves it there, so it all worked out.

CS is without a doubt the most impacted major and the one that requires (along with everything else) perfection on the academic side.

An SAT above 1530 and GPA uw of 3.95 (from public) is the dividing line. Above that, you are one of the crowd that has to shine in the rest of your app.

Below that line, you better bring something major to the table, hook, athlete, legacy, donor, geography, etc.

Expected…without more. This is the holistic view and why other posters said you need more than just scores.

I bet UVA would have admitted if ED. This is a common mistake.

Mistake? I guess your view is high stats kids should settle on UVA even if they don’t want to ED there bc they have a good chance for admission there compared to the school they really want.

I know several who have ended up at a much lower ranked school because they shot their ED shot too high and then got boxed out of the good EA’s. It’s a common story. Kids who, in hindsight, should have just ED’d to UVA. It’s a known risk.

You know several kids, their stats, round of application, where the ended up and the quality of each institution? Wow. Thats impressive.

I don’t know their exact stats. I know their parents thought they should ED to Princeton or Duke and they ended up well below UVA.

At least from our sphere of people, there are very, very, very 1530+ SAT, GPA 4.0ish who didn't get into a top college somewhere. It may not have been the person's number 1 or even 2-5 choice, but it was T15-T20.

This is an outlier unless there is something in the transcript or not a glowing reference. This is far above UVA median….
( you gotta show some ECs (just make it up like many DCUM doucebags…)

Not necessarily if the kid applied RD to UVA. I agree in the early rounds he would have been strong for UVA, but yes ECs, leadership and service need to be there even it’s just the “obvious” kind.

It's pretty specific to school. The scattergrams can answer your question -- for your school and your choice of university.

This is absolutely wrong. It won’t tell you who was hooked, ED’ed, was it TO then, major if had to declare it, ECs or awards.

You are wrong. The scattergrams show admissions by year and if tests were submitted or TO, whether ED, EA or RD, and major. What the heck are you looking at?

I gotta show? No I don't. OP wanted stats and I was willing to post.

For the former, with those stats, absent a big red flag and concordant EC's, that kid will get into a T15ish school somewhere. At some point its simple math, and many fail to realize that the pool of 1530 + SAT scorers is finite. Look at the number of 1530+ scorers and then compare that to the number of 1530+ scorers enrolled in the T15 colleges.

Im aware jackass. Thread is about scores. Didnt ask for resume.

NP.

Hopefully for your student a parent interview is not required. Worry about recommendations if your child is like you. You cannot hide that entitled attitude.

FCPS doesn’t even show the year.

Then your answer should have been: “No definitive line.”

And you’re unkind.

Someone calculated the number of admission slots of those scoring above 1500, and it turns out more than 80% attend a T20 college.
