How did St. Andrew's become such a big draw for Americans?

For private school kids at my DD’s high school who couldn’t get into Wisconsin. Seems prestigious (Will and Kate) but not for best and brightest by a mile.

that equals just under $61K per year (with potential 10% increases year on year) for 4 yrs.

tuition £31,670
Catering £2,332 (intersemester break will be on a self-catered basis)
Accommodation £7,625 (38 weeks)

that's 41627 or $55,429.

travel is about 500 rt from east coast if you plan ahead, which is easily done. can be 450. can be 550. maybe 3500k all in, including my own trips.

I have another kid at Yale. and it's over 90k - not including 3k for health insurance or anything else. so not half but not bad!

also "Fees will be adjusted annually, with increases typically ranging from 3% to 5% to reflect inflationary pressures to which we may be exposed". never heard of a 10% increase but it's been about the same as yale - 3-5%

You didn’t include visa or health surcharge for StA
And I’m on the east coast & not finding any $450/500 r/t flights home for Xmas…. Where are you looking?
And, Yes, it is less expensive than Yale.

I bought xmas tickets in august. The Facebook parents page is really good. People regularly post when to buy tickets.

But sure .. add in the health surcharge. I think it was about $4k - one time payment - and that covered visa and all 4 years of healthcare.

I also didn't include that I get to charge the St Andrews tuition and fees to my credit cards and get miles out the wazoo. We traveled to Tokyo last year for free as a family of 4 - hotels included. Have loads left over. Could have used those for travel to st Andrews but we've never had an issue finding reasonable fares.

Trying to understand how this is different from paying tuition by credit card in the US. Is it because St. Andrews doesn't tack on a 3% surcharge for credit card transactions?

I don’t think all US colleges allow credit card charges for payment even with a fee, or do they?

My kid visited both and picked StA over Wisco. To each their own.

Do you pick last possible exam date w/o knowing the schedule & hope for the best? Or change flights if needed?

Book first morning after last possible exam. It's late - like Dec 23rd? This is only our second year - last year I stressed about this, now I know they'd rather stay on campus than come home early. They're home for a long break - classes start back jan 26th I think . (They changed the calendar a year or so ago after a student survey). If exams end earlier, kids have already semi-planned a pre-holiday trip. They take advantage of cheap flights, that's for sure. But that's how we do it. Some people get changeable flights.

The former, but we purchase tickets that allow changes without penalties. These are always expensive. I’ve NEVER found tickets for less than $1,000, and those around the Holidays are typically much pricier.

Big US private school cliques at st andrews just like here at top private colleges. There kids aren't looking for a discount but are attracted to UK social opportunitiesamd potential prestige of a well known (although not top) international university. A friend's daughter at st. A went to a 'ball' recently and the mom was so excited about that.

College balls are standard UK university traditions. The UK does a lot more balls as a social event and they're quite fun.

To be fair, we’re in nyc and direct flights probably cheaper from here

At our small NYC private 15+ girls are applying - I think more than any other school. It's super popular for private school kids who are used to a cosseted environment, although not necessarily their first choice. My dd isn't applying bc she would be happy at UT-Austin but many of her private school friends do not want a state university. They want to feel like they are at a posh, exclusive school.
