Did OP say they were conservative or cared about that?

CMC did a recent political attitudes poll of their students and 60-70% of students identify as far left or left. I haven't seen one for Wesleyan yet but would assume it's more like 80+% at Wes.

And yes, I'm sure you can be conservative at both campuses but LACs in general tend to attract a very liberal student population. My DD is at Scripps (part of 5Cs) and she says the 5C campuses are overwhelmingly liberal, bordering on far left. She has one conservative friend who has shared with her that she self-censors a lot of her views.

If I was very conservative, I'd probably look outside LACs.

CMC has an active, growing TPUSA chapter, the Claremont independent, and multiple faculty at the Claremont Institute.

true but it's definitely still a minority compared to the majority of CMC students and certainly an extreme minority compared to wider 5C community. good luck to them finding someone to date if you try to find a partner in the wider 5C crowd! many cmcers look outside their college to date since their own is so intimate and small.

You seem obsessed with being persecuted. You’re fine as a conservative at cmc.

Agree that's a devil may care combination. But some kids really don't care about location, vibe, etc.

After touring CMC, we definitely loved the facilities and community, but felt that Wesleyan may be a stronger name for a kid interested in policy. We’d be full pay for both. Any personal experiences/suggestions?

Both are excellent schools. CMC is a bit smaller and harder to get into (only 1200 undergrads versus Wesleyan's 3000 undergrads). Is your DC at senior or junior? Is this for RD or ED. If RD, I'd say apply to both and retour if admitted on admitted student day and select which felt like a better fit. If considering where to ED and they are happy with both, I'd absolutely suggest they ED to Wesleyan. ED to CMC is very difficult because the higher ED percentage is almost entirely derived by recruited athletes and other institutional priorities (including Questbridge/FGLI). Wesleyan also gives a bump for males which CMC does not, in case that's relevant.

But then again the 5 Claremont colleges is double the size of Wesleyan.

yes but the size of the other 5Cs doesn't help at all with CMC admission because they all run admission separately. CMC only has around 300-ish freshman spots total up for grabs. While Wes has 700-ish freshman spots up for grabs. That's over the double the chances for admission. At 5Cs, you compete for admission at one college at a time.

cmc Is a lot less popular a school than Wes. If ED, I’d go CMC.

Agree -- number of spots doesn't double anyone's chances. Your chances depend on so many other factors, including many outside of your control, like how many other qualified students are applying, how many kids with profiles like yours are already in the mix, how many kids from your school are applying, how many from your school ever got in and went there, etc. etc. etc.

… and the acceptance rate, which cmc has a lower one.

I respect how Wesleyan's President Roth was one of the first to step up and stand up to Trump. He's a strong leader and he's committed to staying until 2029.

So he can’t let his ego get out of the way of his administration. Much prefer Hiram chodosh.

I've met them both and like them both. Roth is great as is Chodosh. Unfortunately Chodosh announced that this year is his last and he's leaving CMC. Not sure who will replace him so that's a big question mark.

In these political times, strong principled university president leadership is critical.

It is very unlikely the CMC trustees are going to choose someone politically contentious (like Roth). Their whole thing is being neutral and middle ground.

Feels like CMC and rest of Claremont colleges have upward momentum.

I think people here are first starting to realize that New England isn’t the only place with liberal arts colleges. Especially since conversations here are so heavy on Williams Amherst swat- occasionally Davidson.

This is an absurd take. Amherst and Williams take up most of the oxygen on this board because most participants are prestige whores. Has nothing to do with them being in New England. The 5CC, especially Pomona and CMC are right there behind them in terms of attention. Middlebury also gets an unwarranted amount of attention but I think that’s because there’s one parent who hates it and one who loves it, and they love to take over threads with their fights. Weird that you think Davidson gets a lot of attention. I think all of the “13s” are sort of under appreciated gems. Probably better for all of them that they fly under the radar here. It’s the Midwest schools that really don’t get the attention they deserve. Carlton, Grinnell, and Mac should all get more love than they do.

Try saying a bad thing about Davidson on this board and see what happens- especially when you mention Greek life. Williams and Amherst take up oxygen because they’re in New England- this board hardly speaks of Swat.
