cmc Is a lot less popular a school than Wes. If ED, I’d go CMC. |
My DD just did a virtual information session at CMC and the AO running it confirmed it. Starting with this year's class, CMC students going foward need to take it at Kravis (can't access Keck) unless they go through the channels of getting high level approval. The expectation is that all CMC students fulfill their science req'ts at CMCs new center, since they've invested so much into it. CMC students can still take 5C classes outside of science, but they want to mandate science at Kravis now and they've pulled out of Keck. Pomona kids can still take classes anywhere, and CMC kids can still take non-science classes everywhere too. They are just trying to build commitment to CMC's new science thing while it's new. My DD was turned off because her favorite science is physics and CMCs's new model doesn't seem that impressive in that area. It's weird. I'm not sure why they did this but I'm sure they have their reasons. |

A male applicant has FAR better chances at Wesleyan than CMC, particularly if you apply ED.
Wes admits more students than CMC and there was an article stating there's an unofficial "thumb on the scale" favoring male applicants at Wes a few years back in nytimes. Good luck to DS! If he's truly undecided and wants to go ED, I'd ED to Wes to maximize chances of getting in. Both are great schools so you can't go wrong. |
| Can you be conservative at Wesleyan? |
The current pres campaign is trying to create open, civil environment. I wouldn’t go if a Trumper. |
I have a DD at Pomona and this is not correct. CMC students currently need approval to MAJOR at the other 5Cs, but you can take the intro course sequences at the other 5Cs, by getting a PERM approval like anyone else. It's always been true that CMC, even with Keck, has been unimpressive with physics, and your kid would be better served at Pomona and Mudd. Integrated sciences is an easy, light major so taking classes outside of it to get more exposure to (real) science is not that bad. I'd be more concerned that integrated science is too obsessed with computation over dedicated theory. |
The school leadership is outstanding and encourages dialogue and respect for different opinions. The president of Wesleyan has written about this and puts it into action on campus. |
President Roth desperately wants conservative students and faculty. |
Did OP say they were conservative or cared about that? CMC did a recent political attitudes poll of their students and 60-70% of students identify as far left or left. I haven't seen one for Wesleyan yet but would assume it's more like 80+% at Wes. And yes, I'm sure you can be conservative at both campuses but LACs in general tend to attract a very liberal student population. My DD is at Scripps (part of 5Cs) and she says the 5C campuses are overwhelmingly liberal, bordering on far left. She has one conservative friend who has shared with her that she self-censors a lot of her views. If I was very conservative, I'd probably look outside LACs. |
Depends on how you define conservative. If Bush family conservative, you’re good (Wes alum include Bush family). |
CMC has an active, growing TPUSA chapter, the Claremont independent, and multiple faculty at the Claremont Institute. |
I'm sure that's true at Pomona but I sat beside my DD while she attended the virtual info session this past month for CMC and this is what they said to us. She said that older students at CMC had one set of rules about taking science courses (the PERM thing), but new students (class of 2029 and 2030 and beyond) have different guidelines starting this Fall. She did say you could try to get an exception for niche cases but it did not appear to be as easy as a PERM as in the past or for other disciplines. My DD took notes so this part really stood out to us. I'm sure they will grant some exceptions in the margins, but it was clear they don't want to do this much (or at all) ideally and it sounded difficult. |
true but it's definitely still a minority compared to the majority of CMC students and certainly an extreme minority compared to wider 5C community. good luck to them finding someone to date if you try to find a partner in the wider 5C crowd! many cmcers look outside their college to date since their own is so intimate and small. |
DD has 3 cmc students in her intro course. I’m really doubting you understood or the AO knows correctly. AOs still tell families that Pomona’s cs department is resource capped when it has empty seats in the intro course- they aren’t exactly the most up to date. |
