What are some ideas for "target schools" for 1500+ SAT, 3.75 unweighted gpa, male, poli sci?

For targets could be Case Western, William and Mary (maybe the st andrews jt program), URichmond, maybe Lehigh, Tulane, Emory, Wisconsin, Wake, Villanova, Hamilton, BU, GW. Lots of larger public options.

Emory is harder to get into than Georgetown.

Yes, Georgetown REALLY likes some of the DC privates. They routinely admit down to a 3.5 from ours. Weird but true.
Emory requires a high 3.8 if ED. otherwise it's a 3.9 from our school.

Could be yield issues for your school and Emory

LACs not in the middle of nowhere are very limited Holy Cross, URichmond, maybe Davidson.

OK, I know some on this board don’t get the SLACs, but Wesleyan and Davidson are not targets, especially in RD. Denison and Lafayette probably aren’t likelies either. Maybe none of them are in RD when you consider demonstrated interest.

I’m not the PP but from my DCs public HS Naviance data, 2/3 of Davidson applicants with 1500+ get admitted and 100% of Lafayette and Denison applicants with 1500+ get accepted. Not sure how many are ED v RD. Wesleyan is more competitive and would be somewhat of a reach. My DC senior is looking at all of them right now (except Denison) and all seem to be great schools.

With a higher test score > 1560, you may get in one of Cornell, Dartmouth, Penn, and Columbia; or more often deferred then rejected or accepted.

Better luck at Georgetown and Emory and WUSTL if the score is 1500+.

It also depends on what composed of applicant pool this year at your school.

It’s a private thought right?

My 3.8uw 33 ACT was admitted to Cornell and Michigan OOS

Yes, rpivate school.

There is an invisible line drawn at 3.8. For 3.7+ kids at our private, requires 1560+ to get a chance to be seriously considered at ivies. It's very hard to ignore that GPA. But their applications definitely get read as indicated by deferrals and some acceptances.

This is based on data in the past several years. With test required this year it may be different or may not be.

Anonymous wrote:If money isn’t an issue look at UC San Diego and UC Davis. You need much much lower stats being from out of state than in state. UC will calculate their own GPA so if he took APs sophomore or junior year that will increase his weighted scores. Both schools have excellent poli sci departments and study abroad options.

Someday, people back East will recognize the opportunities at UC Davis and UCSD. But for UCD that is probably far off into the future which is good for CA residents.

Between the wildfires, earthquakes, mudslides, sky high housing prices and you know, lack of drinking water, I don't know why anyone who doesn't already live in CA would choose to move there.

LOL

lol UC Davis is one of the only UCs where these things are very unlikely. UC San Diego is the next safest UC from natural disaster but the housing does costs more once you go off campus. San Diego is much cheaper than the Bay Area or LA.

George Washington
is the best option

I expect the OP may know more than the poster who claims the UC's take lower grades from OOS applicants. It is actually the opposite. In state need a "mimimum of 3.0" OOS need a "mimimum" of 3.4 and that's unweighted obviously. If you look on the UC website you'll see the incoming WGPA for each college is way higher, 4.0-4.8 depending on the college, so the minimums are not representative.

GW, Davidson, Dickinson and Connecticut College offer some of the stronger political science programs in this group.

Vassar doesn't get recommended that often online for political science, but it offers an excellent program.

Michigan oos, still didn't that hard. And which school are Cornell matters as well.

Yes and Vassar also adds a bump for males (as does Brown and Wesleyan) - totally worth adding to your list OP!

Vassar is very strong in poli sci, economics and IR.

William and Mary and Wake would both be good targets.
