Robberies spike in D.C. Friday, Saturday despite anti-crime surge

DC Council can't pass any legislation without it going through congress - who can either reverse it or let it go through. We don't need the national guard to fix the catch and release issues, congress can just address it and override the DC council and also approve the spending of DC tax dollars funded from our 9% income tax to address crime instead of withholding our ability to spend our own local tax dollars. There is already extensive congressional oversight w/out this expensive performative faux occupation

+ The idiots here need to learn that the Wash Post is not neutral in this battle. You must read other sources. Crime is WAY down in the last two weeks in D.C. (Google it). My son lives on the hill and reports a wonderful "vibe shift" from recent years because students and residents feel free to walk around, dine, and bar hop in areas on Capitol Hill. He even saw a mother with a baby in a stroller out at 10 PM on H Street, enjoying the warm evening. Instacart and other delivery services have told me to my face and to him that they are "having a great day" because, for a change, they won't be robbed. The restaurateurs I know report a resurgence in DC dining, which is NOT what the WaPO (which is anti-Trump) wants to report.

You’ve lost your mind. The WaPo helped get Trump elected as much as Musk did. What a joke your argument is.

The drop in crime shows its not performative. Its performing.

If DC had a rational council and Mayor, this would disrupt the status quo and the city would try to figure out how to sustain the gains. But what will probably happen is the council will dither, crime will resume and the feds will take over in a more official manner.

Completely self-inflicted too.

as a dc resident i would welcome additional federal trained law enforcement reinforcements of MPD to police criminals and protect the residents and visitors of DC. What we are objecting to is the policing of everyone in DC with extensive checkpoints, harassment of citizens going about their every day life and fully armed soldiers in metro stations, parks and donut shops. Would also welcome the release of our city 9% income tax funds (which we pay on top of federal taxes) to pay for needed policing etc.. I can't stand the Mayor and have never voted for her - she and the council and be terrible AND thousands of armed soldiers on the streets of DC and be a bad idea.

Ax attack at DC Safeway leaves one employee
A man who police say was caught shoplifting from a Northwest D.C. Safeway has been arrested and accused of slashing an employee with an ax during an attack on Friday.

Police responded to the Safeway grocery store at 6500 Piney Branch Road NW for reports of shoplifting and assault just before 10 p.m. Friday, according to a police report.

The man, identified as 37-year-old Andrew Spielman, reportedly began to put items in his backpack when a store employee approached him. The two engaged in a physical altercation, leading to Spielman slashing the employee with a hatchet, police said.

Wow you would have thought the National Guard and FBI would have stopped this?

2 separate shootings in DC leaves man, 2 women seriously injured; police say
WASHINGTON (7News) — Two shootings on nearly opposite sides of D.C. on Monday sent three people to the hospital, including a man with life-threatening injuries, according to Metropolitan Police Department officials.

Police were first called to a shooting near Brentwood Recreation Center along 14th Street, Northeast, where a man was found with multiple gunshot wounds, unconscious, but breathing at around 4:15 p.m.
The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Roughly an hour later, officers found two women shot in the 1700 block of Mississippi Avenue, Southeast. Both were taken to the hospital conscious and breathing, and are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said

Wonder who is behind this crime spree? Trump better do something. Looks like stopping everyone to take their guns away is not working. Heard there were a lot of robberies where masked police were involved.

None because the PPs entire post is made up. Restaurant reservations are down 31%: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/aug/18/trump-washington-dc-national-guard-restaurants

PP is a troll posting made up right wing talking points. It's incredibly obvious because the trolls are all NPCs who can't make up anything original, they can only parrot talking points given to them because half of them are actual bots and the other half are foreign paid trolls who don't speak English as a first language.

lol whereas op-eds in The Hill are famously neutral and objective reporting
😆 🤡

I also love that you are praising a mother with a baby out on H st at 10pm because we all know what you are saying about her on other threads …

The “surge” is doing zero on the Hill besides filling the metro stations with useless hick National Guard and harassing dudes playing basketball.

DP. What an unhinged post. The PP wasn't "praising" the mom with the baby - they were pointing out how nice it is that a mother and baby feel safe enough to be out on a walk at 10pm. Not sure what you're going on about. And "hick" National Guard? This just speaks volumes about you.

They are all hicks and we all know what you think about black moms out with their babies late at night

FU racist. You are most likely a disappointed Demopuke criminal.

Feel free to post your own source proving The Guardian wrong, but you can't, so you won't.

This is exactly the bad-faith, lazy trolling I was referring to, so thank you for proving my point so quickly and thoroughly.

Crime has exploded in DC since the federal takeover. I look forward to the end of the takeover when numbers will fall back down to normal. Most people I know are too scared to even leave their buildings right now because of increased crime in the last 3 weeks. It’s like we’re all being held hostage.
