Wait until the lawsuit. If diversity can’t be considered neither can legacy preference. That’s not merit.

Selecting or discriminating by race or national origin is illegal under federal rights law.

Legacy is not illegal under civil rights law

Apples and oranges.

Yes, and isn't this the world we want? More for rich white people and less for everyone else.

Look at pre-Covid common data set from 2018 or 2019.

I want someone to tell me. Someone always knows this here.

For enrolled students, 1440-1530 for 25th-75th percentile, ACT 32-35.

And I would assume recruited athletes are bringing down the numbers.

Legacy too if they admit dumb legacy kids

Nice try. Legacies come from families with more money and SAT scores are positively correlated with wealth.

They have more wealth for sure but no one is looking at a legacy kid and thinking merit. Its most likely they take SAT multiple times, have individual tutors and are following the path set out by their parents when they were really young (niche sport at a young age seems most common). They will not be the innovators or movers or shakers of society.

You have an odd notion of the law. Diversity, in the view of the people currently in charge, is the consdieration of race which is prohibited. Legacy raises no such issues.

They do no admit dumb legacy kids. Dumb donor kids yes but the legacy kids all are withing the cohort.

Trump and his people are so focused on merit - why don’t they have a problem with legacy admissions?

Stanford is laying off people. They are struggling for money. Donors cut back sharply with the loss of legacy.

no

No, and it doesn't really move the needle unless the legacy is really rich/donates a bunch of money.

Yeah, run-of-the-mill legacies whose parents donate modest amounts or less aren't getting any meaningful bump.

People think it moves the needle though. And it ties them to the school. Donations from alumni are down.

I personally think donations to alumni are down not because of lack of legacy but because the school is perceived as having destroyed something special in the culture, but I suspect Stanford is desperate to get any hook back into alumni donations so they’re trying this.

Bullshit lol if this was true they wouldn’t need legacy admission.

Merit is nothing more than affirmative action for rich white kids. They never wanted regular kids to have a fair shot.

+1

The fact that it exists shows that the kids need the hand up. Of course there are dumb legacy kids who wouldn’t get in otherwise.

+2 Even if they’re not dumb they’re probably boring. A class full is rich legacy kids is extremely vanilla and not conducive to a robust academic community. “Chad’s” mom can buy him good grades and test scores but that doesn’t make him intellectual.

Legacies are only white guys named Chad?

As a person who attended a top college, I now understand how being a legacy helps kids perform better. For example, my kids are studying for the SAT, while my husband and I just took the test. We encourage our kids to develop relationships with teachers and seek extra help when necessary. Non-legacies may not understand the smarts are necessary but not sufficient to outperform their peers.

I am not a legacy but an immigrant and even I know this. Frankly, some of the legacy kids I see at my kids private are not the smartest kids but everyone knows they have a leg up when it comes to admissions. That is nothing to be proud of.

+1. Their inner self knows pretty well that they are not qualified to achieve a specific admissions decision. I wonder, wouldn't that negatively affect their mental well-being in the long run?
