Why isn’t this house selling? McLean, VA

Anonymous
I honestly can’t stop staring at how unnecessarily ugly this house is. What even is happening with all the kinds of siding. What is going on with the stone skirting?

The bathroom with the tub by the windows is so weirdly enormous. I don't understand why anyone would make a bathroom that large with that layout.

I noticed that too. What a ridiculous use of space.

Ok, I saw this house too, a year ago. It actually looks a lot nicer in person. It also had some cool features.

I think the neighborhood is the problem. Specifically, the home next door is disgusting and at the time had a boat sitting in the driveway. It was seriously awful looking and the family room basically overlooks it. I am not going to pay $3m to have a view of someone’s gross falling apart boat.

+1. I just checked our comments on Redfin from when we saw the house, and one is "ugly neighbor house with boat"

Another IT company owner aspiring to be a home builder. Seen it a few times. I advise to stick with IT and find other ways to invest your $$.

You can see the boat in the neighbor's driveway on Google street view. It's also interesting that if you scroll toward the neighbor's house on street view, the lot changes from the current hideous McMansion to the house that was there before, which wasn't much to look at but was more in line with the rest of the houses in the neighborhood. It's a good reminder of just how out-of-place this house is.

Even with a full price offer, owner will lose money. This is clear sign that thing have changed across the dmv.

For $3.15M a buyer can find the lot that they want and hire a builder to build a home to their specifications, no need to buy a spec home where you don’t love the layout or finishes (or the lot that sits next to the house with a boat in the driveway)

I don't get why they don't hire an architect! Hire an architect! It's worth it!

Seriously though can someone explain the porch columns to me. It looks like the top part of the porch is unfinished. Is it supposed to look like that?

Yes and No. while this home is butt ugly and too large for the lot it’s not that easy to find desirable lots nor finding an honest, reputable “custom” builder. Add in a heavy does of 24 months of multiple stresses and you may rethink? You would only appreciate if you BTDT.

+1 - and I'll add that it sticks out like a sore thumb in the neighborhood. In a tight market/seller's market that doesn't matter so much, but that's not the market we are in right now.

That is my reaction, too. So why do builders keep building these $3M plus homes? They just seem to be sitting. There are two more $3M houses around the block from this one currently being built.

8000 square feet is too big. Takes up too much of the lot. Master bath fugly with egg tub [have to get a tabble to set down anything], ugly banisters, brown kitchen, 5 out of 10 flood factor in Mclean is a potential hassle so why bother...

If you think the house next door is "disgusting," you must think that that vast majority of homes Americans live in are disgusting. I'd take it over the McFarmhouse Monstrosity. And I'd enjoy my weekend boating.
