UPenn Bends to Trump Admin; Revokes Lia Thomas Medals

Taking away a winner's medals is deeply shocking, because this person competed lawfully. They should not be stripped of their medals as if they'd cheated - they did not cheat, since they did not break any laws at the time.

Going forward, organizations can have whatever rules they want. But don't make them retroactive!

I didn’t think it was fair she was competing on the omens team but this is a great point. Penalize Penn or the ncaa for having dumb rules. Or even retroactively make ties with the runner ups! But Lia herself is a victim of grown as5 administrators who were showboating and should have known better.

The fact that he continues to call adults by childish nicknames.

This is all performative garbage for the ignorant masses while he continues to profit off this country.

10000% this. The amount of time people have spent wringing their hands about the tiny number of athletes involved is bananas.

Sure. But it's the principle of the thing. And that matters a lot in politics - particularly when 90 percent of Americans disagree with Democrats when it comes to very basic things like, who is a girl or woman? Should biological men be allowed to compete in women's sports? Should men be put into women's prisons or domestic abuse shelters if they simply declare they identify as female? These issues might not be an issue for you, but don't we as a society have the responsibility to the girls and women for whom these situations are quite serious?

Democrats are losing a lot of people on the principle of this issue. Penn and the NCAA were really wrong here - and it's been very costly for everyone. I suspect Trump wouldn't be president today if Penn had made a different decision.

It was 100% cheating. Lia Thomas never should have been on the women’s team in the first place.

It’s not a tiny number of athletes when you cascade down all the women impacted.

I did notice Trump is making the university write letters of apologies to the women on the swimming team.

The required letter of apology is a nice touch!

I hope they apologize for forcing the women to change in front of him. Someone should be charged for that.

I feel like the fair competition based reservations in this case are reasonable but how is changing in front of this person any different than changing in front of an always been female lesbian? (Assuming lia is attracted to women and that’s the concern?)

Are you a male or female? This logic is wild. As someone who feels uncomfortable with a male ob/gyn, no question I'd prefer a lesbian over a gay male doctor. Why not just say women and men should change in the same locker room because LGBTQ people exist anyway? Odd.

If you are one of the women who had trained for years to get to the top of your sport and competed against Lia, yes, it is incredibly unfair and un sportsmanship for the women to have to compete against a man.

Yes. Just another example of the Trump administration not doing anything that makes lots of people's lives better. Just looking for ideological splitters to keep people voting for them.

You don’t seem to understand. This IS what many of us voted for.

Please vote for somebody who makes life better. Roiling the stock market, laying off federal workers, letting Elon Musk have unfettered access to data, trying to get religious institutions funded with tax money makes my life worse. Whoever medals in NCAA Swimming doesn't matter.

Female former collegiate athlete here- I hate 99% of what trump says and does, but this is 100% the right thing to do. Never should have been allowed in the first place.

No, the athlete is the first victim here. Lia Thomas was not breaking any rule when she competed, and therefore she did not cheat. Under new rules, it's fair to ban her from competing again on women's teams. But it's NOT fair to strip her of previous wins, which are rightfully hers. Rules are rules. If you adhere to rules a higher authority created, you cannot be accused of cheating, and you should not be punished.

Even if you absolutely hate trans people, surely your personal integrity must allow you to acknowledge this!

I can't even with the hypocrisy of some people. You're just blinded by hate.

If all of “this” nonsense goes away, or just starts to recede even a little bit? Life will be better for me and certainly for my young children.

The only reason that Lia was there in the first place was the bullying that Lia did to join a team where Lia could actually win.

Do you bring that same energy when there is a birthday change for athletes?

I’m not sure I understand the question. How do you change a birthday?

They all deserve apologies and money for this travesty. Thomas is not a woman and should not hsve been allowed to compete as a woman.

I find it abhorrent and fake. These same people kicked and screamed when Title IX was proposed. They don’t give a shit about women’s sports.

+1

These people are not looking out for women's athletics. Not in any meaningful way.
