When did "beach week" start?

You sound like a lot of fun.

I’m fine with that. I don’t need to be fun. They can party in college. This thread has been interesting and it’s definitely the norm depending on where you grew up.

Wait… what is beach week? Do the kids really want the beach house for a whole week? What about parents? Are they all alone??

My sibling and I were early 80s Sidwell grads and definitely a thing then. It was pretty tame though.

But why does it have to be? It's the norm here and has been for over 60 years. Don't participate if you don't want to. This area doesn't have to conform to wherever you grew up. How entitled.

It was big in the 80s. I graduated in 1988 and my brother and sister 1984 and 1986. Beach week was a thing then.

My kid last year didn’t go. It was not a big thing at his private boys school. There is a dad/father International trip some do.

I love this! It looks like my calendars from back then. My mom used to talk about framing them—has all the family events too.

I make Shutterfly calendars every year and save them. My kids are now 17 and 19 and it’s neat to see the months/events/trips/r Rey day logistics at different points in time.

Just don’t let your daughters party with future Supreme Court justices, and they’ll be fine.

Maybe it was legal back in the old days? Now the leases explicitly do not allow high school groups.

They were doing it before I was born when my parents moved here in 1985. My sister graduated in 2003 and me in 2007 and it was still big then and now.

In college classmates from the Raleigh/Durham area and suburban NJ who participated in beach week as HS seniors in addition to folks from the DC area. The West coast kids most definitely did not.

OP again - the bolded portion is my experience.

This has been an interesting thread.

DP also from the West Coast and we definitely did not.

I graduated in 1994 and most of my friends stayed in places owned by their parents or grandparents (myself included). Those who did not had to have an adult stay with them. I have definitely seen kids kicked out of places in my parent's building when the "adult" was nowhere to be found.

Right. Now the leases specifically say No high school group and someone over 25 must sign lease and be on property all the time. Weird how suburban white kids' parents dont think rules apply to them. 🙄

There are absolutely some people that will rent their house to 18 year olds for beach week. They jack up their weekly rates a ton...and they aren't luxury houses...but early June isn't peak vacation travel for anyone with less than 30% occupancy at beach places.

It's a thing in places near a beach. I grew up in upstate NY -- no beach week for my older siblings. I graduated from high school in 1999 in NC -- beach week at Myrtle Beach.
