When did "beach week" start?

I graduated in 1994 and most of my friends stayed in places owned by their parents or grandparents (myself included). Those who did not had to have an adult stay with them. I have definitely seen kids kicked out of places in my parent's building when the "adult" was nowhere to be found.

Right. Now the leases specifically say No high school group and someone over 25 must sign lease and be on property all the time. Weird how suburban white kids' parents dont think rules apply to them. 🙄

There are absolutely some people that will rent their house to 18 year olds for beach week. They jack up their weekly rates a ton...and they aren't luxury houses...but early June isn't peak vacation travel for anyone with less than 30% occupancy at beach places.

In obx? I doubt it

Nobody mentioned a specific beach…but OBX is a big area and I am sure there are some willing to lease.

I grew up in the DC area. 1991 grad of public high school in MD and went to OC, MD - stayed in a complete dump but had so much fun.

Stepsibs were ‘89 and ‘91 grads of private schools in DC and went to Rehoboth. Definitely tamer than mine, ha ha.

My mom is from this area, and it wasn't a thing when she was in HS. When did "beach week" become a thing?

wow, we did beach week in wild wood in 1978. it was wild. we had half keg and food pilfered from a country club 3 of us worked out. we would put filet and new york strips in the trash, like the whole loin and take it out of trash later.

i didnt get laid, but many did, I was still clueless.

but lots of fun. back when I had lots of energy and slept well every night. we had quarter lb of columbian also.

good times.

But it was a big thing for graduating college in a rural area, we went to Dewey Beach.

I'm a little curious what the sweet spot distance to the beach for this to develop as a tradition is. I grew up just about an hour from a NC beach and it was a thing, even though we could all go to the beach whenever under normal circumstances.

I would think an hour or more in distance as the kids who lived an hour from me had one.

But I lived in a beach town in which many showed up for beach week....

Didn’t read all the posts—maybe this has been said. My oldest sibling graduated in 1981 and beach week was just sort of a thing some people did. By the time I graduated in 88, it would have felt odd not to go—it was a thing.

I am from the Houston area and we had beach week for Senior in Galveston at the same time as the Kappa Beach Party. A bunch of high school girls in things and young horny adults in a frat. What could go wrong? My Mom forbid me from going but I was intrigued. A few girls did come back with an extra person in them.

Is your mom just saying that they didn’t do beach week back in her day? Does she also say no one used to smoke or drink when she was in high school? Because beach week has been around this area for a long time. Unless your mom is over about 65, something is fishy. What’s she trying to hide?

+1 I mentioned upthread that my Dad graduated from BCC and went to OC for beach week in 1957.
