How much student debt to you still have?

I have about $45k remaining from law school - when I graduated it was about $55k. I don't know why I haven't paid it off seeing as how I'm 7 years out now and have been making a biglaw salary for most of the time. I pay more than the minimum, but not much more. I consolidated at less than 3%, and I think mentally that has made paying the loans off a low priority. It was a private school, but I had a partial scholarship so did not have to borrow the full amount. Luckily my parents footed the undergrad bill.

I'm 40. None. In-state tuition undergrad (parents paid--stipulation was that I had to go in-state public or I had to pay difference on my own). Thankfully, VA has several outstanding public universities.
Graduate Degree (Tuition paid by full stipend. I was teaching assistant. I did take small loan for living ~3,500. Paid off by 27).

DH had very large undergrad loans for a private, elite university. He did not make any major purchases for years after college--no car, cheap rental housing, etc. Walked far to public transportation, etc. He had them all paid off before we were married at 28.

BigLaw PP, I paid little above the min for 18 months until I realized that the principal had not budged an inch and that I was losing money with every payment.

I almost added that myself. Does it help you to know that I went to an HBCU and thus did not take any precious scholarship money away from a deserving White? Do you need my SAT scores? Or did I get extra points for Blackness? Does it matter that I signed a 3-year service agreement with the federal government like ROTC recipients sign? I know it is shocking to have to consider, but I may just be Black and industrious and smarter than some Whites. I agree that affirmative action should be based on family income, rather than race, but every Black person who EARNED a scholarship is not necessarily less worthy, as you seem to imply.

But this is not a big problem for me; Whites like you are ubiquitous.

Thought AA helped get people into school but not necessarily pay for it.

$48K total. I consolidate my debt at a low interest rate and stretched out my payments for 25 years, however less than 10 years later, I now owe only $5K, which should be paid off before the end of the year.

I'm an AA recipient.

Agree. Just as silly as thinking a black person's IQ could ever be higher than that of a white person. Didn't you read The Bell Curve?

Posted tongue-in-cheek by an Affirmative Action baby.

Sorry, AA recipient. I am clearly way too sensitive.

Wow. This post makes me feel bad. I have $160K from veterinary school and undergrad. Low interest rate. I have been paying $550+ per month for 5 years and it doesn't seem to make a dent. Seems like it will never be paid off...

We could REALLY use a dentist in the family. We'd be willing to help with the student loans.
