How much student debt to you still have?

Anonymous
Is it from undergrad or grad? How old are you now and how much longer before you think you can pay it off entirely?

None. But I don't think a poll can tell you whether your situation is good or bad.

I think that the only answer to that is to do a financial plan and see whether or not it is interfering with your ability to meet your goals for a downpayment on a house, for kids' college, and for your retirement.

No student debt. I was lucky enough that my parents paid for undergrad (state school) and I have been finishing my grad degree very slowly, because I have been paying "in cash" for each class. Luckily, my new job is picking up the bill for the last few classes.

Less than $5,000 in student loans . $0 from parents.
I received scholarships for college and law school which covered all of the tuition. I borrowed for living expenses and to cover the fees for the bar exam, etc. I would have borrowed whatever amount it took for me to rise out of poverty and achieve my goals.

$12K from undergrad (I was fully funded for my PhD). I could pay it off, but the interest rate is so low I make more in a CD. It will be paid off in about 7 years.

My husband had about 40K that we paid off earlier this year (higher interest rate). So glad to have those beastly payments done with.

Private undergrad, private law school. Currently $70K in debt. Undergrad was almost a full ride - parents paid $4K a semester and I took out some loans. Law school was also partial scholarship approx $18K yr.

All federal loans so I consolidated at 2.7% interest rate. Graduated from undergrad in '01 and law school in '04.

About $10,000. I pay $650/month so it should be paid off by the end of next year! They are both undergrad and graduate loans.

PP, 2.7% is great! I consolidated in the 90s and got about 7% which was good for that time.

$112k, all from law school. $609/month. Graduated in '05 so I've been paying for 5 years. I work for the federal government so I don't have a lot of extra money to throw at it, but I do throw a little extra money at it almost every month. While I'd love to get rid of it, it's worked into our budget and is just another bill so I'm not overly concerned about it. The federal loans are at 2.7%. The private loans are obviously higher. We have 2 kids in daycare. When they are both in school, I hope to be able to throw a lot more money at the loans and get rid of them, but I don't really have a timeframe for it.

I must admit that I regret grad school...

I graduated in 1997. Paid the last of my student loans in 2003, after the sale of my first townhouse.

I had about $25k total between undergrad and Computer Learning Center. My wife had zero, she was able to get internships, etc., and so had no problem with me rushing to pay off the student loans.

This counted the PLUS loans my parents took out that I made payment on. I also made sure to close out the PLUS loans (and a car loan in my Dad's name) first before closing out my own loans, though.

None. I had about $120k from law school, but lived VERY modestly until I paid it off. It took seven years of BigLaw, but I did it. Now I'm debt-free (and out of BigLaw!)

About $70K, down from about $120K when I graduated law school in 2005. I pay more than the minimums, but don't go crazy because the interest rates are very good. If I keep paying at the same rate it should be done in about 5 years.

About $3k, from graduate school - I had a scholarship that covered my full tuition first semester, then got a job at the university that offered tuition benefits, which covered most of the rest of my degree. My loan covered one semester of school until I was eligible for tuition remission. I paid off my undergrad loans about five years out of school with money I inherited when my grandfather passed away.

None. Graduated in 1996 with about $10K of debt from undergrad. I paid it off by about 2002 or 2003. I had my grad school paid for by the place I worked, so no debt from that.

I tip my hat to those of you who have paid off/are paying off six figures worth of school debt. Well done!
