Jewish Kid at Catholic School

DS is friends with one of these boys and he loves the school. Obviously Gonzaga is not an option for your DD and I’m not familiar with the all girls Catholic schools in the area. But I think it’s worth at least looking at some of the independent Catholics like
Stone Ridge or Visi.

My son is at Gonzaga and we are not Christian. It is fine. My kid is happy there. Nothing wrong with learning about Catholic religion. There is no indoctrination

It's absurd. And kind of actively cruel for a parent to even consider. The educational options are not better and they will be actively practicing a religion that you don't ascribe to. And these aren't religious schools in history only, they are a pray before every class kind of religious school.

I can see why the school would admit you, they want your $ and probably think they can convert your kid.

But as a parent, the only reason I would ever send my kid to a religious school that wasn't our religion is if we were in a place where there were, literally, no other options for a quality education.

Our Catholic school is about 65% Catholic families, they are not trying to convert the other kids to our religion though they do go to the same religion classes. Our kids do not pray before every class and they have robust science classes. The families who aren't catholic send their kids there because the education is excellent and there are benefits of going to a single sex school.

I think your view of catholic education is outdated at best and somewhat bigoted.

Being protestant at a Catholic school (which is likely most of that 35%) is not the same as being Jewish.

I think PP perhaps was being hyperbolic, but “spreading the word” an incredibly important component of Christianity based on everything I’ve heard. Jews don’t do proselytize, so what may feel like a light touch to someone else can feel like a lot to us.

I’ve heard great things about many catholic schools in the area but we are also lucky to have great secular options in the same area.

We've been looking at other options, and she is definitely gravitating towards single-sex schools. I would love for her to have options beyond Holton/NCS. Do any of you have experience with being a Jewish student at the DMV Catholic schools? Does one feel like an oddball or is it not really a thing?

I would assume it varies based on the school. Right now we're open to them all (Stone Ridge, AHC, Holy Child, Visi) and would love to hear people's thoughts. My mother actually grew up Catholic and went to Holy Cross back in the day so I have a general sense of the cultural milieu. But how does a Jewish kid fit into that?

You are an idiot
AHC and Holy child are anti Jew period.
Maga haven
Not better than public at all do not teach science as well or math.
AHC academics are lower than Holy Child slightly better college acceptance however both teach to Catholicism which they should but you as a Jew should not want that for your kid.
.
And no your child will not fit in
My child a Jew played soccer with AHC girls from age 10-18 those families are Jew haters. They are also racist.i can prove this by my a facebook as every day I see these people spewing online. Why have I kept them as a reminder to myself that ai did not pay enough attention when my kid played soccer with them.

My DD went to public school and MIT, her acceptances were CMU , Stanford etc. her peers from soccer York college, west Virginia University, no college, MC, a few Catholic small colleges etc..

Again find your brain.

What on earth are you talking about? So Catholics don’t learn science? And we indoctrinate people? Honestly, more than anything else, I have found it’s much harder to be Catholic around Jews. I was at the JCC taking a class and I had some Jewish women question why I was there and how they would never set foot into a Christian center. This was the most unwelcome I had ever felt anywhere. My kids are in Catholic school and have a few Jewish friends in school who are invited to every event and birthday parties along with the rest of the class. Nobody has ever questioned why they are there.

Catholics don’t generally proselytize - that’s more an evangelical Christian thing.

We’re Episcopalian and my son is having a wonderful experience at his catholic high school, including excellent science classes. I can definitely see how it could feel othering for a kid who wasn’t some main-line Christian religion though.

Gos forbid a catholic school requires Catholicism be taught.

You are blatantly lying. I have never in all my days seen anti Jewish behavior at a catholic institution. I’ve seen plenty of Jewish hate for Catholics and Christians, much to my chagrin.

Troll. Ignore posts that use the word "indoctrination" and those from people who obviously don't know that Catholic schools are very strong in science or that the Big Bang theory was first articulated by a Catholic priest.

Didn’t mind the religion classes (Ethics was actually one of DD’s favorite classes), but don’t underestimate the ways in which Catholicism is part of every day life and interactions at the school.

And that will vary from school to school, especially in high school.

I think the hail mary and our father prayers in religion class would feel very awkward, and attending mass.

Students can sit silently but respectfully during prayers and mass. This works fine for some students. Others are bothered or uncomfortable even with that, in which case Catholic school is not a good option.

AT our HS--it's really just Freshmen year.

The religion the next 4 years are World Religion, Ethics, Social Justice... they were some of my kids' favorite classes and while they are Catholic they had received very little Catholic education (ame from public school)/not regular church goers prior.

^ next 3 years
Systemic theology too

I think that broad understanding of different religions is essential to be fully educated.

This is a difficult moment for Jewish students, whether they are in high school or college. I don't think I would want to put my Jewish kid in a Catholic school where they would be an outsider from the outset. Now more than ever, it is so helpful for Jewish kids to have Jewish friends and peers. I suppose if you supplement with Jewish camps or other types of involvement, it could be ok. Talk to other Jewish families at the school and find about their experience.
