Virginia Tech Waitlist Movement

He is thriving at one of his 5 other acceptance options.

FWIW, it’s probably a rejection. Try to remember the downsides of VT: annoyingly hard to get to from DC and rural, big and you have to navigate a lot yourself, not an amazing freshman experience from most accounts, ugly architecture, and their football team/ pride and joy has been terrrible lately.

PS I would do this exercise with any school that rejected my kid or waitlisted them. Try it on and see how it feels.

We paid our VT deposit yesterday but I’m 100% with this PP. If you need to get over a relationship you don’t spend time thinking about the great things. You remind yourself of the time he farted in his sleep and the way he insulted your grandmother.

Don't be angry - don't be sad
Don't sit crying over good times you've had
There's a girl right next to you
And she's just waiting for something to do
Well there's a rose in a fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can't be with the one you love honey
Love the one you're with

DP. Yes, that is certainly the perspective an immature and disgruntled parent would take - very clear your kid wasn’t accepted.

My DC has never had a hard time navigating anything at VT. The advisor she was assigned since the summer before freshman year has been excellent and helped steer her through a major change.

Her freshman orientation and year was fabulous and she made some of her closest friends within her dorm and organizations related to her major. Most people report similar accounts. It’s a happy place full of smart, down to earth students. Oh, and the campus is lovely.

The rural, mountainous aspect of the school is a draw, not a negative. Tons of outdoor activities to do in a gorgeous area.

So sorry your kid never got to experience any of that.

Vtech is really weird. They definitely yield protect, so deserves no respect. Dc waitlisted, in state however accepted to every public ivy business program. With acceptance rates of less than 10%. Dc has very high stats and strong Ecs But now don’t even care if they accept and give any merit.

I’m sorry you can’t take what I think is a fairly benign and honest assessment of the flaws of one school. It’s one perspective. Flaws can be found in every school.

But none of your comments were accurate. I mean, you're certainly entitled to dislike the school because your kid didn't get in, but at least be factual.

VT doesn't yield protect. Sorry. From their website:

"Yield Protection
Virginia Tech does not participate in yield protection."

Yes but VT does aim to fill its class with 40% first gen college students, and it has done so every year since 2022. That alone is a disadvantage to the average kid applying with college graduate parents.

Here’s an article from the school about it.

Which schools are the “public ivy business programs”? Parent of a junior that is trying to expand DS’ list. Thanks.

Good b schools at OOS publics: Michigan of course, UNC, Indiana, Pitt, Penn state, South Carolina. Virtually any oos public bschool will get you a job.

Sorry your kid was waitlisted (though it sounds like they have other solid options) but VT does not yield protect. They make that very clear and it’s stated explicitly on their website. It’s just that competitive for in-state applicants.

VT is really weird. We’ve seen kids who weren’t active and didn’t take hard classes get in and kids who have amazing grades and super active not get in

But is a kid that was waitlisted at VT for business really getting into Michigan Ross or UNC? Come on. I can see UofSC, Penn State or Indiana.

Yes. In at uva , Ross , unc, ucb, U.C.L.A. only true rejection stern and didn’t apply Ed so that’s what make vtech such an outlier. Could care less.

NP, not a VA resident, but I've been reading this forum for a long time. VT yield protects (defer/waitlist/deny students they don't think will attend) even though they explicitly say that they don't.

There is no evidence of yield protection at VT. Just because you keep writing this doesn't make it true.
