We are white, second and third generation Americans traveling with two teenagers.
Thoughts?

I would not take a personal phone or computer out of the country. TSA scans what is incoming and if they find any anti-trump content, confiscation and arrest happens. Ask the Michigan Lawyer who was detained last week if I am being hyperbolic.

But don’t you think he was flagged because he is a lawyer and of Middle Eastern descent? It seemed like an obvious case of profiling.

Of course it was- but seems pretty apparent nothing to do with anything criminal history, etc. What if you are listed online as an employee of an organization that they have decided is an enemy of the administration? Maybe a big law firm or a university? The slope is very slippery here.

Read the article. He was specifically flagged due to his representation of a U of Mich student protester. They aren’t just profiling random Arab Americans.

I read the article. I still am unsure that they would have stopped a blond haired guy named Jimmy Jones.

“Unsure” about an illegal potential stop is exactly the (unconstitutional) problem.

Other people can find you the links, but they have detained white immigrants from Germany, Canada etc
Yes, those were not US citizens but they are targeting white people too.

Yes, I know. But I think there’s a big difference in their approach between citizen and non-citizen. I think it was BOTH his ethnicity and what he does that made him a target. I just don’t believe a white US citizen would have been stopped—which isn’t right, either. None of it is right.

Your chances of being questioned don't diminish if you turn off facial recognition. You merely create a speed bump which can be overcome if the authorities choose to do so. Their actions may be driven in part by your attitude and responses to their questions.

This is total victim blaming.

White straight people have nothing to worry about.

my kids, born of the most boring, whitest people in America, are routinely mistaken for belonging to various ethnic groups. thus, I worry.

Both sets of grandparents were born in Ireland. I was born in Chicago. Wife is 100% Scottish. We are white af. My daughter is a perfect example of "Black Irish" and yet people mistake her for Hispanic all the time. It's wild.

True about chances of being questioned. If you are concerned, consider encrypting your phone.

Aren't people using facial recognition or finger prints at more risk of data being taken by criminals on the street if they get mugged?

Because when they took your phone and you have facial recognition installed. They hold it up to your face and the phone unlocks.

Sure but then they can direct you to unlock your phone with your passcode. If you refuse, they could seize your phone.

Right, they seize your phone. But it’s locked. So it’s an inconvenience when you have to replace it. But you’re not being arrested for your social media posts or texts. When the phone unlocks with facial recognition, they don’t hand it back to you. They go through all your personal information. I’d rather have my phone seized. Enjoy that expensive brick.

I have absolutely nothing to hide. Zero. Zilch. However, I have never, ever posted my political views online nor do I post anything incriminating on social media. Maybe you should have thought twice before posting your online rant. They can look through my phone all they want.

What about texts!

Behave however you want, but ignoring the impact of your behavior on others and the potential consequences is just foolish, no matter how self-righteous you feel.

I disabled mine, but I also travel to countries known for drugging tourists/Americans. I travel with a burner phone that doesn't have any passwords or investing apps. It's wild how much information is on our phones, but at the end of the day there is only so much you can do, especially if there is threat of violence.
