Assuming both have large student bodies and offer the same kinds of activities, and your child is doing great academically either way… why choose the private (and pricey) route if you're not specifically seeking a religious focus? What do you feel you get from it?

My local public school sucks, and my son needs a safe and rigorous environment to succeed. He wants to see girls, so that put DeMatha and Gonzaga out of the running. I don’t have the cash for Bullis or Maret, so SJC was a nice sweet spot, and I got ample aid.

St John's is very similar to public. More strict. But similar in all other ways.

No when it comes to college admissions public is way better same with Math and science.

Awesome! If you believe that, then your kids won't take up spaces at Catholic schools that so many others want. Please stay in the public school and enjoy!

Same with Gonzaga and Visi?

Bethesda W schools?

No. You have a group of wealthy high achievers who would perform well anywhere due to parent involvement and resources for supplemental supports. The schools are still overcrowded, have major disciplinary concerns, and all the same admin issues at any other public.

Doesn’t that apply even more to the "top private schools "?
Then there are no good private schools around.

Look at the second sentence of PP's response. The Catholics are not overcrowded, they have far fewer disciplinary concerns and lots less red tape. Core academics and the caliber of students might be similar, but the wraparound environment is very different and impacts experiences tremendously.

BS yes they are overcrowded. LOL "fewer disciplinary concerns" you have got to be in lalaland.

BS absolute BS.

Catholic schools teach indoctrination.
Catholic schools do not even come close to teaching math and Science as well as public.

Catholics in this area are at least 50% MAGA that says the system has failed.

Wow. That’s a lot of trolling a short space of time. Indoctrination troll is busy today.

What if your local public sucks. And you don’t have the money for prep or sidwell?

Anonymous wrote:SJC's classes are smaller than MCPS high school classes, and that means more student participation and teacher attention. I believe that the average class size at SJC is about 20. My child has never been in a class larger than 23 students.

My child take honors/AP classes at SJC, and they write more papers (and get a lot more feedback) in their English and history classes than their friends who are taking the same AP classes at BCC do.

Also, SJC allows kids to focus on school without having to worry about violence. In the time DC has been in high school there have been no bomb threats or lockdowns at SJC. They are a regular occurance at BCC these days. I've only heard of one (small) fight in the time that we've been there, and all of the kids who were involved were expelled.

I agree with the above—it is a good general description of some of the advantages.

Sent my DS to SJC, he was class of 2022, so he was a pandemic-timing high schooler. I thought SJC was an amazing value. I was very happy with it there. A wonderful, positive, not pressure cooker, but not chaotic high school experience.

Public high schools are teaching math by app these days. Its way different than the TJ heyday of the 90s

I agree. It’s not even worth responding. I’m guessing this is the same person who always claims that Catholic schools teach Creationism?

(Which they don’t.)

the troll who thinks Catholic schools in the dmv are the same as tiny southern Bible schools teaching dinosaurs aren’t real is exhausting.

The Catholic schools in the area often do a better job at ensure their students understand math concepts and place them according to ability vs accelerating every possible student while leaving major gaps.
