ED to UVA or W&M

You can see the benefit from their CDS.

Last year, ED admit rate was 24%.

RD admit rate was 16%.

This year:
VA ED accept rate 29.5%
VA RD accept rate 11%

OOS ED accept rate 21%
OOS RD accept rate 9%

But maybe a reflection of the quality of aplicants?

OP, can you EA @ UVa and ED at W&M?

UVA is ED now. Gotta choose one. One of the reasons WM likes ED. It’s getting the kids for whom WM isn’t a consolation prize after a UVA rejection.

I am the person you are quoting. What do you mean, UVA is ED now? My child got into UVA EA this year (for fall entrance).

They also have EA, according to https://admission.virginia.edu/admission/deadlines-instructions

If it's a toss-up as to where she prefers, my suggestion is to apply to

UVA EA
Lots of others that give good aid early
W&M ED

then you can reassess

No, you cannot "reassess" if you get into W&M ED. If you are admitted ED1, you are committed to attending W&M and must withdraw all other apps. W&M issues its ED1 decisions in December (as does UVA); UVA doesn't release EA decisions until mid-February. The deadline for applying ED2 to W&M is in January, before the UVA EA results are released. And W&M does not offer EA.

^to clarify the above, you are of course also obligated to attend W&M if you are admitted ED2 (not just ED1).

Sorry, but I thought EA was binding and ED was not. Am I backwards?

ED is binding. EA just lets you know a little earlier than RD.

Disclaimer - I am not saying ED applicants are subpar.

The advice from school and private counselors is to ED if you stats are a little lower bc they are more willing to take a chance in the beginning.

When I said "reassess" I meant, pending answers. Obv if you get in to an ED you go

ED is the way to go.

Any in state applicant who doesn't apply ED to UVA is foolish.

Our kid was accepted ED to UVA from NoVA. I’m not sure the marginal benefit over EA in-state at UVA is worth the binding commitment. In retrospect, I wish they had EA’d to UVA and let all of their other applications ride out.

Do you really? Won't it hurt either way? if they are accepted to all tho others, you are forced to let them go. If they are rejected, won't you hate them a little bit more and fear you kid 'barely' made the cut? IMHO its better not to know.

Unless they ED to W&M, of course.
