I hate how obnoxious some of you are and I’m a NP to this thread. |
How about not make garbage a center piece of the family experience? Find something more interesting and productive to do maybe? People in the US are constantly dosing themselves with food. Go to Walmart and you’ll see unlimited isles of garbage. That’s what people are snacking on and rewarding themselves with. |
Grains are not "garbage." Telling me I need to cut out all grain-based meals for my family because they make it hard for me to lose weight is completely insane. |
Quoting this back and there is not a single suggestion here to cut out all grains. The text is all here for you to review if you do the same. If you are eating an entire bucket of white rice as this family meal and that only, maybe I wouldn’t do that. The suggestion here to focus on single ingredient foods that include lean meats and vegetables is real advice. Nobody is carrying a bunch of extra weight if they are doing that and eating other complex carbs. |
Sorry but grains are garbage. You don’t need them. Your kids really don’t either. |
I would be in a constant state of borderline rage without grains.
I'm 53, eating over 2000 calories a day, about 60 to 75 minutes of medium intensity cardio 5x per week, 3 meals per day, plenty of snacks, a small dessert most days. Very limited alcohol, limited processed foods. I weigh between 115 and 120. DH eats 2x per day, never snacks, and weighs 100 pounds more than I do. There is no one correct way to eat for everyone. |
I actually really appreciate the advice to try cutting out snacking. I was already doing a version of IF but I could see how at this age of declining estrogen, the constant sugar spikes from snacking could be an issue. I’m going to work on that combined with being better at monitoring calories and see where I end up. |
Snacking is for toddlers. Older children and adults do not snack if they eat proper meals. And they won't get fat either. It's really that simple. |
I'm under 40 and insulin insensitive- none of this works for me. I gained weight on keto. |
I don't snack and eat, on average, one meal a day and I've been overweight my whole life. Even when I was anorexic I still was above average weight. If we accept that menopause does this why can't we also accept that genetics does this? |
NP and +1 I’d rather eat a juicy medium-rare ribeye, perfectly grilled chicken thigh, or a crisp-skinned filet of salmon, than any type of cardboard-resembling “snack.” Bonus points for the fact that all of the above fills me up and doesn’t leave me wanting to snack an hour later. |
DP I also believe that people overstate the value of grains. I especially like pasta and rice, but it takes up the smallest amount of real estate on my plate. Meat first, then vegetables, then a small portion of starch. At the end of the day, even the noblest, most virtuous grain is still converted to sugar in your body. It might take longer than other grains, but that process still occurs. It’s the easiest thing to mitigate if you are looking to lose or maintain a healthy weight. |
OP here. Wow, parts of this thread got out of hand.
The frustrating thing is that heavier people (generally) burn more calories at rest. So all things being equal, if you have a 140lb and 150lb person, the heavier person will be burning a few more calories just by virtue of having a bigger body. But now in the throngs of perimenopause, and being 10lbs more, I definitely do not burn more. It feels so frustrating to be so active and eat pretty clean but still put on some lbs. I feel like it came on all of the sudden - the past 6 months or so. |
It’s definitely frustrating. If you can get in to see a menopause dr, that might help. It’s so common to gain weight during peri and afterward. There are tools around that help many people. Maybe you’re one of them. |
Yeah but what do eat during that meal? There is simply no way this is possible if you’re eating one normal sized meal. |
