My almost 13yo DD is 5”1 and 130lbs. She’s solid, always has been.
Not overweight, DR says she’s fine, she eats healthy 90% of the time and is very active. |
Mine is 5'8" and 120 pounds at 12. Expected to grow more and does bouldering, track, cross-country, and half-marathons. |
PP here. Is considered underweight/really low on normal. She eats healthy but we are okay with some junk food so that she can put on some weight/gain extra calories for sports which happen every night of the week. She has a fast metabolism and doesn't eat as much as she should, but we can't force her. |
FYI if your pediatrician told you she’s underweight I would suggest finding a new doc. 120 pounds at 5’8” would be slightly underweight for an adult woman, but is an average healthy BMI for a 12 year old girl (52nd percentile according to the CDC calculator). |
Are there medical issues? That's a extremely low weight for a kid that height. My 14 year old is the same height an 147 lbs which puts him pretty solidly in the middle of the healthy weight category. |
How do you know this? I have no idea what my own 14 and 17 year old weigh. I could guess but it would be a wild guess and could be way off. Their physicals were last summer and I don’t remember. I could not guess what my niece or nephew weigh. |
I would consider getting a doctor involved. Low vitamin D, iron, or ferritin? Maybe a thyroid problem? Any menstrual problems that might indicate PCOS? |
Not medical issues, just genetics. Both DH and I were underweight as children and teens and young adults. Do are our kids. |
Both extremes are harmful. It’s weird to be so afraid of a scale and knowing how much you weigh. |
I’m not afraid of it, it’s just completely useless to me. Who cares how much I weigh? I exercise, I eat well, I feel great and my clothes fit well. |
5’ and 98 lbs. She is very muscular and always has been. Swims, plays soccer, rides horses and even when she’s not she’s always moving.
My son is 11 same height, 105lbs. Lots of sports but he is one with the couch when he’s not. He looks softer. Doc isn’t concerned with either. They both are good eaters. I’ve always heard they grow out bf they grow up. I wouldn’t be too concerned. But if it bothers her maybe she can cross train a bit with you or a friend. |
14 year old boy, 5'6 and 125. He looks like a wall of muscle (lifts weights). |
5'6 daughter at 100 pounds, super active in sports |
3 kids; very different
Dd 18 5’6” 135 DS 16 6’2” 170 Dd 14 5’2” 100 All kids extremely athletic, girls in club lax boy in football. First DD works hard to keep weight in check. Is at 135 for in season sport. She is normally 142 ish I think. Younger two have very fast metabolisms and have to work to put weight on. DS is trying hard to gain for football. Doctors for all three are happy where they are. |
5’3” and 98 pounds. She’s very active with school and club sports. We also have a lot of short/petite people in our family. |
