This link shows that it has become harder to get into W&M since 2001.

“Not competitive.”
“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

Exactly. Nice callback. 😀

Thanks! A favorite. 😂

People (you?) keep saying this and this only true if you're trying to switch into one of the "restricted majors." Otherwise, there is no problem switching.

You are free to declare your major later. Virginia Tech does admit by major, but it would probably be similar in that you could choose one they are trying to keep populated (e.g. English). Someone else can comment on difficulty in changing major. Check the back of the Common Data Set for # and % of graduates by major.

Could also help to be applying to a new program they are starting up -- coastal and marine science and public health will be new in Fall 2025

Well, the Coastal and Marine science will be an interesting one because it has full pay scholarships thanks to a $50M donation.

you get paid per post? on here all the time boosteratti

The PP was suggesting coastal and marine science would be easier because it is new. It is very likely not going to be easier because of the full scholarship.

I read that the Marine Science major will take only about 8 to start and I don’t think they will be freshmen.

Yup it's either a 2 or 3 year program I think. Similar to the business school.

So it would not be a separate application for first time in college.

It sounds like it will be available to current students who have satisfied prerequisites.

try applying for majors in Art or Sports Trainer or English. I know several kids who got in doing less in high school than stellar kids with good grades who did all the things.

Many at DCUM ultimately want one of the restricted majors. That is why folks keep cautioning about this.

Just stop with your absurd and fake anecdotes.

My DD was admitted ED to W&M this cycle and she selected undecided. They made a big effort to emphasize that this campus is a place where intellectually curious students can take time to explore and figure it all out.

Also I heard from counselors that VT is catching on to kids doing this so make sure electives, extra curricular, etc support the intended major.

From social work to finance -- that is rich! Economics maybe, but finance? Should be ashamed

I was thinking the same. How shameful.

Tech does not even offer a degree in social work.

FWIW, W&M had a 9% acceptance rate this year. 17,000 applications and selected 1600

No, you aren't factoring in yield. They want a freshman class of 1600. Probably admitted 3x that, at least, to yield the class they want.
